Ultimate Fantasy Football Strategy - New Orleans Saints

008 Outlook:
The Saints line will be similar than it was in 2007 with only Jonathan Goodwin replacing Jeff Faine at center. In the two games where Goodwin replaced Faine at center in 2007, the Saints ran for 205 yards and only gave up one sack. The much stronger Strief could also replace Jon Stinchcomb at right tackle which would also help the rushing attack. Jammal Brown should be fully recovered from his bone bruise suffered in camp last season and his play should be much improved in 2007. The young Saints offensive line should be much better in 2008 than it was last year at opening holes for its running backs but the loss of leader Jeff Faine at center could create some confusion in the pass blocking schemes. It remains to be seen as to whether or not this line will be able to build some chemistry in camp and get off to a much better start than it did last season. Strief, Alleman and Bushrod provide decent depth but if either Brown or Evans were to be injured for an extended period of time, the line would be in big trouble. The Saints should have a much improved running game but in order to avoid the 0-4 start it had in 2007, Jammal Brown will have to remain healthy and show why he was a first round pick in 2005.

i like our line....i think losing faine was a huge deal cuz he called out blocking schemes and on top of that...he was a good blocker....its tough to say if goodwin will be a solid replacement....i like that battle at RT in the article tho...someone earlier had argued with me about brown and streif but never looked at it as stinch and streif....if streif can start at RT and be effective on passing downs then he will allow our right side some much needed stability....as far as carl nicks goes....i like the pickup...i went back and looked at several mock drafts and the highest had him goin in the first round....but most had him in the early second....to pick him up in the 5th is a steal and i look for him to give some competition a few years down the road....side note....i like andy alleman and i hope he has the opportunity to show what he can do

I do think we should be concerned about our C position. It isn't like the OL was dominating last year, and we did lose an NFL starter in Faine (character issues aside, he was an at least good C).

I like our depth and skill at all the other OL positions; but, unless there is some competition for the C spot (maybe Goodwin v Lehr v Nesbit?), I'm a bit concerned about the very interior of our line.

Seemed to me, most of the time Faine was calling "line plays" he was just annoying Drew and holding up the snap.

I think if he were really "any good" Cleveland would have never let him go for next to nothing, even with Bentley signed for them. They had nothing behind him, and he was a 1st round pick for them. Strange, no?

I liked Faine while here, but to be honest, his play never really instilled a lot of confidence from my perspective.

actually to be honest i thought lecharles bentley was a better center than faine...we got the better deal tho b/c he got hurt and never played for them...if faine wouldnt have been calling the blocks then i think there would have been a lot more sacks...hes part of the reason our line did so well the past few seasons....dont take ne thing away from him..he is one of the better centers in the league

Seems like LeCharles is returning for the Browns minicamp. Good for him. Our OL was a big problem last year, sure we were passblocking like gods keeping Brees upright for most of the time. Runblocking however was an utter disaster. We were missing a LeCharles a Turley, somebody fierce, somebody with the killer instinct. We need a leader to emerge on the OL to be able to run the ball effectivly. People thought Reggie looked bad but som would any small back without holes to run through. A bigger back can lover his shoulders and get 4 through a closing hole.

While Faine might have calling the blocks for our line, Goodwin did a good job in the two games he started, and I feel that overall Goodwin will be a better run blocker from what I have seen so far.

Also the real reason we gave up so few sacks last year is because of Drew Brees. Brees is one of the best QBs at getting rid of the ball quickly when he sees a blitz is coming. The guy has outstanding awareness in the pocket. While I do think that our O-Line is good I think that Brees definitely makes them look better than they actually are. If we still had that retard Brooks back there we would still be giving up tons of sacks regardless of who is calling the blocks

Shhhhhhh... don't say that. There are people here that will nail you to a stake for saying losing Faine was of any significance. Be careful.
