New Orleans Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis: Decis
New Orleans Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis: Decision on tackle Jammal Brown in team's best interest
Jammal Brown's season is over before it started. The New Orleans Saints on Tuesday placed Brown, a two-time Pro Bowl left tackle, on injured reserve. They also re-signed veteran offensive lineman Nick Leckey. Brown, who underwen two surgeries before this season, hasn't played since the first exhibition game. He had surgery Aug.¤20 to repair a sports hernia. On Sept.¤11 he had surgery to repair a hip injury. At the time, the Saints didn't elaborate on the nature of that injury and projected Brown would be out for at least six more weeks. Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis said Tuesday the team didn't want to discuss details about the injury or why the expected timetable changed. "He had an injury, and we just decided it was in the best interest of our team to put him on injured reserve," Loomis said. Brown, the Saints' top draft pick in 2005 out of Oklahoma, has been a starter since becoming a pro. He made the Pro Bowl last season and in 2006. He has started all 58 games in which he has played. He has missed at least one game because of injury in each of his seasons with the Saints. In his rookie season in 2005, when he played right tackle, he missed three games because of an ankle injury. In 2006, his first season at left tackle, an ankle injury kept him out of one game. In 2007, a knee injury sidelined him in the preseason. In the regular season, a strained calf sidelined him for one game. Brown injured his hip against Denver in Week 3 last season and left that game in the second quarter. He also missed the Chicago game in Week 14 with an ankle injury. Brown is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent after this season. But if no collective bargaining agreement is reached, he would become a restricted free agent. The Saints would have the right to match any offer Brown signed elsewhere, or receive a draft choice as compensation if they let him go. Jermon Bushrod started at left tackle for the Saints in the first three games this season. He injured an ankle Sunday against Buffalo and was replaced by Zach Strief. The Saints haven't given Bushrod's status for the game Sunday against the Jets. NFL injury reports will be out today. The Saints signed Leckey in March. He was inactive for the first two games, and the Saints released him Saturday. Leckey, who can play center and guard, has played in 57 games, with 32 starts, for Arizona and St. Louis. The Cardinals drafted him in the sixth round in 2004. They waived him during the 2007 season, and the Rams signed him. Re: New Orleans Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis: D
Well now they might be able to sign him for a cheaper deal since he has to sit out all of this season .... Loomis might want to start looking for his replacement soon if his injuries continue to mount up
