The worst part about it is that the Cowboys drafted Walsh in the Supplemental draft! And, if I remember correctly the only pick worth of mentioning the Cowboys took with the Saints' picks was Alvin Harper.

There were also "supposed" rumors of JJ wanting Walsh to replace Aikman in Dallas before the trade. Walsh did QB for JJ at the U of course.

Also, this was all done while the Cajun Canon was still on the roster but wanted to be paid or traded.

Not the best moment in Saints' history.

Bobby was a good quarterback that was tied to a team with lousy management that let all of our good players go instead of paying up for what they had. Hebert, Mills, Anderson and the Saints got what they deserved at the time. That god those people and that management team is long gone.

I've watched that Hebert video over and over now just to watch the play and the reaction of the fans. You can hear their reaction to the fumble and it's loud but when Ayodele scoops it up it gets really loud. I sure wish that I was there.
I get goose bumps just watching it.

Speaking of that Steve Walsh trade, which was for 3 draft picks, Jimmy Johnson was offering the Saints Troy Aikman. The Saints insisted on Steve Walsh instead. Gee...

Remember skymike, it was a pretty even battle at the time between Aikman and Walsh. The Cowboys did draft both with first round picks, and Aikman was pretty horrible at the beginning of his career. I remember this information when the deal went down. Before the Internet I was a serious AM radio junkie... LOL. Also, a while back Jimmy Johnson was being interviewed and said it turned out great for the Cowboys that the Saints insisted on Walsh. I know this is hard to believe but true. It would be nice if I can find an article on it, but that would be almost impossible at this point.

If I remember correctly, or heard correctly, it was Jerry Jones that insisted on keeping Aikman.

Yep, Saints chose Walsh over Aikman.

I don't blame Hebert for leaving the Saints in the circumstances he left. In any case, Bobby is a local boy, grew up cheering for the Saints, played for the Saints, and obviously, he loves 'em Saints. He's all right by me.

I never knew that--wow!
Damn, couldnt they just play punt, pass, kick? Walsh couldnt throw the ball
over Aikman's head.

The guy watching Hebert is funnier than Hebert.

What's not to like about an ex Saints QB from down the Bayou who really loves the Saints and is one of their biggest fans as well???

Those of you who so easily brush off what he did is mysterious to me...and brings me back to my original question. All I can say is all those who welcome back the turncoat must not have been around when all this crap happened. It is beyond me how one person can cause so much chaos in an organization and still be welcome by the fans...just beyond me.

It is interesting to point out, though, that while Fourcade was finishing the season that Bobby was benched, he won the last three games on the schedule while beating a tough Philly team and a tough Buffalo team, Jim Kelly and all, in Buffalo...and in doing so won a $50K incentive bonus for Hebert. Hebert had a clause that said if the Saints won 10 games he would get the extra lettuce.

I hear ya LB. But I think you have the wrong enemy. If I was going to choose one it would be Jim Finks. He really didn't want to pay Hebert. If an organization really didn't want to pay me I think I would also find another place to work. Even if it is the competition.

Plus, I highly doubt that even Deuce would turn down a contract from Atlanta at this point in his career. And that wouldn't make him a turncoat.

Geez...don't get me started again. If we had been counting on Deuce in any way and he held out for more money...and then we traded our future away in an attempt to replace him...and then he scored a TD against us and "flew off the field" to taunt us...I'd probably feel the same way about him.

Fair enough. I wouldn't. I would say "good for you Deuce". Then I would sit back and watch Drew tie the game.

You know...I really can't make myself hate Bobby...and I'm like SM in that I do enjoy listening to him talk, at times. Other times I don't. I can't say that I like him, either, after all that happened.

What I was wondering, from the very beginning, though, is it the fact that Bobby was from Louisiana and Favre is not from Wisconsin (sorry, DIU, I'll never talk about him in another one of your threads...and I'm not trying to be, well, you know), or will this thing eventually blow over and some day Favre will be sitting in the booth at Lambeau field doing GB games?

Well, I was around when all of that happened, and I would like to ask you, what exactly is it that Bobby did to the franchise?
Did he bench himself?
Did he come up and/or approved the trade for Walsh?
Did he bring in Wade Wilson?
Was he coaching the Saints in 1992-1993?
If Fourcade was that good of a QB that "he" won the last 3 games of the 1989 season against tough teams, was Bobby's idea to release Fourcade and bring in the aforementioned Walsh?
Why didn't Fourcade start in 1990? Did Bobby made that decision?

After all, Bobby was benched, right? He didn't bench himself. It was the coach's decision to bench him with the blessing of the FO. So how could a player who "obviously" wasn't good enough to play for the team in 1989 create all of this turmoil in 1990-1991-1992-1993?

No Sir. You can resent Bobby for holding out, but you need to resent Jim Finks as well for mis-managing the entire affair.

He didn't handle the benching like a man.

Favre isn't from Wisconsin like you mentioned and didn't play college ball there either. But I would bet that after his football career he could do whatever he wanted in there and he would be welcomed.

So...I'm guessing from your comment that you don't believe Bobby deserved to be benched in the first place? That would be a valid arguement, IMO.

Whether Bobby deserved to be benched or not, the entire situation was totally mis-handled by the coach and the FO.

To me, this is what it boils to:

In the eyes of the coaching staff and the FO, was Hebert the best option at QB for the Saints?

If he was, and benched him for reasons other than his play, then the coach and the FO screwed things up from the get-go, Hebert should not have been benched, and Hebert should've gotten paid. One thing is for a starter to have a bad game, and the coach sitting him that game, another thing is making a starting QB change. Once you do that, you are telling that QB and everyone else he's not good enough to be your QB. And if he's not good enough to be your QB, what do you care as a coach or FO if he sits out a year or not?

If he wasn't, the team should've cut ties right there and then at the end of the 1989 season. Again,if he's not good enough, why would the coach of FO care if he's even on the team? And definitely they should have not given Dallas all those picks for Walsh, or plain bring in Walsh for that matter. And most definitely should not have brought Hebert back in 1991 and admit they were wrong.

So for me, whatever Bobby did for whatever reasons he did it, it does not compare to the royal screw up of the coaching staff and Front Office in handling the situation.

..and for the record,I didn't think Bobby deserved to be benched at the time.

Time cures all ills. Deep down Bobby has proven that he's one of us.

Finks screwed up the deal. Bobby acted like a man and got a better deal in Atlanta. I welcomed playing him when he was with Atlanta.

Bobby is a Who Dat through and through. He's forgiven by me. Joe Horn too!

Just goes to show you how much improved the front office is now compared to back then ... different era but teams normally try to keep their best players around, only knock I have on Hebert is that he couldn't win with the greatest linebacking ever hell even Trent freaking Dilfer pulled that off
