Payton Keeps Hartley and Carney

Garrett Hartley Profile - New Orleans Saints - ESPN

News: Both Hartley and John Carney will remain on the Saints' roster for the rest of the season according to coach Sean Payton, reports Saints' beat writer Jeff Duncan.
Spin: This news comes as a bit of a surprise. Duncan believes Carney will serve as the Saints active kicker on game days for now. However, with both kickers being on roster, this does not seem like a vote of confidence for Carney. Hartley will be waiting for the opportunity if Carney struggles or the Saints feel the need for a stronger leg. We will continue to monitor this situation.

Take Carney's brain and put it in Hartley's body. Then we can call him Hartney or Carley and have one great kicker!

Yeah, probably Harper. I completely understand why Payton is doing this, Hartley is a great young talent and the future, Carney is old but accurate. Still, I really do not see the Saints sticking to this very long. Eventually, the roster spot is going to be needed.

BDub's avatar, although not a female, is the best so far.

During Morton Anderson rookie year Bum Phillips added ex-Houston place kicker Tony Fritsch. Anderson credits him with teaching him the position and that when you kick a field goal, you don't have to kill the ball, just get it over the goal post.

I kind of thought last year we might have brought Anderson in to work with Mehleoff (spelling) since they were both left footed kickers and Anderson was wanting to be the oldest kicker but that never happened but I can see why we're holding on to both of them for the time being with other teams looking for kickers including the Giants.

Good Move.

Actually I guessed this one in the (Hartley post earlier) before being announced. Good move shows Payton's mindset has changed and how important the kicking game is in all facets. The last two years the kicking game has kept us out of the playoffs. Let Carney coach Hartley up and see what we have next year.

lets be realistic
it was far more then just the kicking game that kept us from not making the playoffs

Re: Payton Keeps Hartley and Carney

Maybe it wasn't all the kicking game and maybe we would not have went anywhere anyway but in my eyeys was the main reason for our downfall in 2007.

Probably a good idea to keep Carney. I'm betting the Colts would have picked him up w/ Vinatieri injured. Instead they had to sign Matt Stover.

And if you count Morestead we are carrying three kickers. That's fine for now, so let's just hope no one gets hurt.

The Giants want him that reason was enough to keep him for now
