Saints hope to change post-bye week luck
By SHELDON MICKLES
Advocate sportswriter METAIRIE — The New Orleans Saints changed up their bye-week routine in the hopes of changing their luck for Sunday’s showdown with the New York Giants in the Superdome. The Saints are 0-3 in the first game following a bye since coach Sean Payton took over in 2006, so they figured they would try something else with the Giants coming in for a matchup of undefeated teams. Payton usually holds at least a couple of practices during the bye week, but last week gave his team five consecutive days off. They returned for practice Monday and after their normal day off Tuesday were back on the field Wednesday to continue their preparations for the 5-0 Giants. Payton said Wednesday that he wasn’t concerned about losing the momentum his 4-0 team has built going into Sunday’s game. “We haven’t done real well off the bye week so we tried to change the routine up a little bit,” he said. “That being said, we had good work today and I think our players will be ready.” Coming off the bye under Payton, the Saints lost to Baltimore (35-22) in 2006, Carolina (16-13) in ’07 and Atlanta (34-20) last season. They did win an NFC Divisional Playoff game in 2006 after earning a first-round bye. The LSU experience Saints quarterback Drew Brees took advantage of the bye last Saturday to travel to LSU to be the guest picker on ESPN’s GameDay set. “It was fun. That was my first time being on that campus and it was pretty wild … it was nuts,” Brees said. “Obviously, there’s a big carryover with LSU fans and Saints fans. It seems like they go hand-in-hand; if you’re (for) one, you’re definitely (for) the other. But it was definitely a fun atmosphere.” When asked how he did on his picks, he said, “Terrible.” Back on the field The bye gave several Saints a chance to heal up. Four players who did not participate in their most recent game, a 24-10 win over the New York Jets on Oct. 4, were back on the practice field Wednesday. |
