The New Orleans Saints rode the passing of Drew Brees and an opptunistic defense to rout the New York Giants 48-27 before a sellout crowd of 70,011 at the Superdome on Sunday.
Brees lit up the NFL's top-rated defense for 369 yards and four touchdowns. He completed 23 of 30 passes without an interception. His passer efficiency rating was 156.8.
Brees' favorite target was Marques Colston, who had eight catches for 166 yards and a touchdown.
"He had one of his better games of the season," Saints coach Sean Payton said.
The Saints defense forced a fumble before halftime that set up a touchdown and also had an interception. They had another interception negated by a penalty.
"The defense really came up with a big play there," Payton said. "That was huge that we were able to score after that fourth-and-1."
In his first game ever in the Superdome, Eli Manning was limited to 14 completions in 31 attempts for 178 yards. His passer efficiency rating was 61.0.
The Saints scored touchdown on their four series and did not trail in the game. They have not trailed in a game all season.
Scott Fujita left with a calf injury and Payton said what the issue is won't be known until Monday.
Here are the in-game updates:
3:15: Hakeem Nicks just burned the Saints' secondary for a 37-yard touchdown catch from David Carr, who's in the game for mop-up duty. It's still a blowout but defensive coordinator Gregg Williams was not happy about that one.
7:07: Heath Evans' 2-yard run extended the Saints' lead to 48-20. Saints have 495 yards total offense. Their 48 points are most allowed by Giants since 9-19-99, when they lost 50-21 to Redskins in Week 2. Mark Brunell is in the game for the Saints. This one's over.
12:09: Lawrence Tynes' 38-yard field goal capped an 11-play, 60-yard drive by the Giants. It could've been closer but a marculous 10-yard TD pass from Manning to Brandon Jacobs was negated by an offensive holding penalty against New York's Shaun O'Hara. The Giants then settled for a field to trim the Saints' lead to three scores.
FOURTH QUARTER
4:10: The Saints have officially opened a can of Whoop on the Giants. It's now 41-17. Marques Colston's 12-yard TD reception has opened the margin to 24 points late in the third quarter. Drew Brees has gone over 300 yards. He's got 316 yards and four touchdowns. The Saints are lighting up the Giants secondary, exploiting mismatches in coverage. They've picked on safety C.C. Brown and cornerback Kevin Dockery.
THIRD QUARTER
HALFTIME
0:09: Reggie Bush danced around left end into the end zone for a touchdown to give the Saints a commanding 34-17 lead. The Saints have an amazing 315 yards total offense. Brees is 17 for 20 for 247 yards and three touchdowns.
0:18: Crazy turn of events in the final minute. The Giants stop the Saints on two tries from the 1-yard line. First, they stopped Mike Bell on a dive play on third down, then they stood up Pierre Thomas at the goal line on fourth down. Sean Payton was so upset iwth the call he ran out on the field to the 5-yard line and was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct and a 15-yard penalty. On the ensuing drive, Saints safety Roman Harper sacked Eli Manning and forced a fumble that was recovered by Scott Shanle. Shanle returned the loose ball to the Giants 7.
3:19: This game has turned into an Arena Football League shootout. The Giants scored another touchdown thanks to another big kickoff return by Domenik Hixon. This time Manning hit Mario Manningham for a 15-yard strike. The Giants had to drive just 37 yards for the score.
5:04: The Saints answered the Giants' score with their fourth touchdown of the game. Lance Moore caught a 12-yard TD pass from Brees to make it 27-10. Moore toasted Giants corner Kevin Dockery on a slant play and was wide open in the end zone for the easy six points. The score was set up by a big pass interference penalty against Giants cornerback Corey Webster, who got his feet tangled up with Saints receiver Marques Colston. The infraction cost the Giants 35 yard. Brees has now completed13 consecutive passes and the Saints have scored on all four of their offensive series.
7:41: Ahmad Bradshaw's 10-yard touchdown run trimmed the Saints' lead to 20-10. The score was almost an overthought after a controversial call by referee Ed Hochuli erased an interception return for a touchdown by Darren Sharper. Sharper picked off a pass by Eli Manning in the right flat and raced 70 yards untouched for a touchdown but Hochuli called Jon Vilma for a late hit, high to Manning's head after the pass. The call not only negated the score but gave the Giants 15 more yards, giving them first down at the Saints' 19-yard line.
12:40: The Saints have opened a can of whoop on the Giants. They just scored again, this time on a 36-yard pass from Brees to Robert Meachem. John Carney's extra point was blocked, making it 20-3 but the Saints have seized control early. And they still haven't trailed this season. Brees is on fire. He's 13 of 15 for 170 yards and two touchdowns. His passer efficiency rating is 153.5. He's completed 11 consecutive passes.
SECOND QUARTER
0:00: The Saints lead 14-3 after one quarter. The Dome is deafening, crowd really into it. The Saints have 10 first downs, 150 yards total offense and have converted 3 of 4 third downs and their only fourth down attempt. David Grunfeld/The Times-Picayune
Jeremy Shockey scores a touchdown against the New York Giants.
0:03: The Giants took advantage of a big kickoff return by Domenik Hixon to get their first score of the game. Hixon returned the kickoff 45 yards to midfield, setting up the 49-yard field goal by Tynes after the Saints stopped the Giants' series after one first down.
Linebacker Scott Fujita has a lower leg injury for the Saints and is questionable to return. Troy Evans has replaced him at outside linebacker.
2:11: Jeremy Shockey just caught a 1-yard touchdown pass from Drew Brees to put the Saints on top 14-0. The touchdown was set up by a big catch by Marques Colston. Colston made a spectacular catch on a seam route for a 28-yard gain to put the Saints in scoring range. It looked like Colston scored and officials initially ruled it a touchdown but then overturned it after the Giants challenged the call. Officials ruled Colston's elbow touched the turf at the 1-yard line, setting up Shockey's score. Brees was 6-for-6 for 80 yards in the series. The Saints have marched 70 and 80 yards for touchdowns on their first two drives. Brees is 11 for 13 for 123 yards.
3:02: The Saints are marching again. Brees is 4-for-4 on the drive.
7:19: Mike Bell dove in from 2 yards out to convert a big fourth-and-1 play and give the Saints an early 7-0 lead. The Saints have scored on every opening drive this season. They have four touchdowns and one field goal.
9:45: Lance Moore is coming up big. He just caught his third pass of the drive. Saints have first-and-10 at the Giants 11.
12:47: Shockey catches big first-down pass and then talks a little trash to the Giants' huddle and sideline. Not surprisingly, he's into it.
14:17: Saints start in a hurry-up offense, just as they did in two weeks ago against the Jets.
14:56: Robert Meachem earns the start opposite Marques Colston. Reggie Bush starts at running back.
PREGAME
The Saints win the toss. Jeremey Shockey is the team's honorary captain, along with unit captains Drew Brees, Jon Vilma and Troy Evans.

I was there and that was a straight BEAT DOWN!! We are now the BEST team in the NFL.

I don't care what people say about the Vikings or the Colts. The Saints controlled almost every aspect of the game today. I mean, the LOCKED it down!
