Vilma's hit on Manning

Ok...I know the Saints got penalized, but did anyone else see the hit Vilma laid on Eli? I thought Eli's cleats were gonna come off. They ran the ball for the rest of the drive if I remember correctly. That was a hit!

Yeah they replayed it a million times. I think Vilma thought he still had the ball and his momentum carried him. But it was hell of a hit and it did slow Eli down.
The fact is he is Archie's kid and seems like a good guy, glad nothing serious came of it.

The worst part was it was going to kill a pick 6.

Re: Vilma's hit on Manning

Vilma left his feet trying to block the pass. It was a grill-to-grill hit. Vilma was trying hard to pull his head back :) ...

I thought Eli could've avoided it but stood there waiting for the hit.. if that's the case, that's heads up from Eli.

I don't think it's going to cost Vilma $25K, because there was no intention to spear ELi, but a good $5K. Compared to that hit in the Panthers-Bucs game, Vilma caressed Eli's grill.

It was obvious Vilma was trying to pull back, but his momentum carried him. Too bad, another pick 6 by Sharper would have put him in the Pro Bowl this year no matter what else happened the rest of the season.

Re: Vilma's hit on Manning

That's such a tough rule to live with. By rule, it was a good call but, I hate having a big play negated by this rule. The reason is this: First of all, a few years ago that wouldn't have even been close to roughing the passer in any way because there was no way to stop without hitting the QB. It was by no means a late shot. Secondly, when you're playing that fast, being partially blocked, and don't know if the QB will move to escape, or stand in and throw, it puts the defensive player in an impossible position even if he has the best intentions.

The other thing is this, if you're attacking the QB directly in front and moving forward, you can't even attempt to bat down a pass without risking helmet to helmet or hand to helmet contact because, even worse than the call on Vilma is when you see an incidental touch by a defensive players hand on the helmet of a QB. Ive see that called also. The refs really need to use discretion in this particular case. Same with the contact to the knees, sometimes you're blocked into them.

The Vilma call was legit I suppose but I'd like the see the language changed somehow before more games get decided by one of the more marginal contact to helmet or even contact to knees calls. (Pats-Ravens)
