Three thoughts as the Saints try to build on their fantastic 5-0 start with a trip to Miami this Sunday:
1) The biggest surprise thus far? New Orleans is averaging more yards per carry than in any previous full season in franchise history. Through five games, New Orleans is picking up 4.6 yards per rush. The team record is 4.5, set in 1979 and equaled in 2003. The ’79 Saints had the Thunder and Lightning combination of Tony Galbreath (708 yards, nine touchdowns) and Chuck Muncie (1,198 yards, 11 TDs). The 2003 Saints had Deuce McAllister at his pre-knee-injury peak (1,641 yards). The 2009 Saints have undrafted Pierre Thomas (5.9 average), unwanted free agent castoff Mike Bell (4.4) and underwhelming Reggie Bush (3.9). The offensive line, which used to be better at protecting Drew Brees than opening up holes, deserves tremendous credit for its improved run blocking despite losing Pro Bowl left tackle Jammal Brown for the season with a hip injury. Jermon Bushrod, who had not played a down on the offensive line entering the year, has stepped in admirably for Brown. Left guard Carl Nicks, center Jonathan Goodwin, right guard Jahri Evans and right tackle Jon Stinchcomb have started all five games. Zach Strief replaced an injured Bushrod against the New York Jets. This unheralded group won’t be anonymous for much longer if the Saints keep winning. 2) The Dolphins game will be the toughest of the season to this point... 3) Minnesota, not Denver, is the most suspect undefeated team... |

Re: Saints on pace for record average per carry
We have talent at running back although Reggie hasn't taken off yet errr....That was a heck of a take off for theTD from the 6 yd line. Reggie is about to be more productive for us and PT and Bell are looking good.
