Drew Brees, Jonathan Vilma up the ante at practice

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees and linebacker Jonathan Vilma always like to put a little something extra on the line when the first-team offense and defense go head to head during two-minute drills and other situations in practice.It's nothing serious, just a hundred bucks or so. But they both want to make sure the other guy knows he got beat.
"I tell people all the time how competitive Drew is, " Vilma said. "It started actually during OTAs, and it's been going ever since. We just thought it would spice things up."
Not that it was necessary. Brees said what's really at stake, more than anything, is pride.
"It's the 'We just beat you' or 'They just beat us, ' " Brees said. "(If you lose), you end up walking off the field throwing a helmet."
The result of those spirited competitions has been a net gain for the Saints. Players and coaches said the offense and defense have helped bring out the best in each other by those battles throughout the offseason, training camp and during game weeks.
