Still keeping 2 kickers
Can someone explain to me, with our recent injuries, and more pressing needs in other positions, why we still have Hartley AND Carney? The team is playing well, and I'm not complaining about bad play, but what I am saying is that we could use another player, that would be more important than kicker. I haven't seen the stats, but, uh, we don't kick alot of field goals last time I checked. We are more of a "touchdown" team. Hell, we hardly need a punter!
Maybe Moorestead, and Carney, just needed a third person in Hartley, to make their poker games on the sideline more interesting. |

Re: Still keeping 2 kickers
I honestly don't have a problem with it. It's hard to second guess the coach of a 6-0 team. If the game was on the line and we needed a 56 yard field goal to clinch something, I'd like to know that my kicker has the mustard in his leg to do it. In '06 we carried 2 kickers and made it to the NFCCG (I think).

Re: Still keeping 2 kickers
With Morestead being able to kick I am only a little surprised that we still carry 3 kickers. (Morestead is listed as a punter) Payton has been let down by kickers at critical times and we do have depth. We don't have to run out to the market for another player or activate someone from the practice squad. If injured players are able to rehab and get back relatively soon then let's not mess with the chemistry.

Carney is not 100% so maybe that is what it is all about. I reckon Carney will weaken as the season goes on, so maybe Saints are trying to hold on to Hartley.

Re: Still keeping 2 kickers
Hartley has big potential and is yet to miss one in a regular season game. Carney is a proven vet who can still kick it 50 indoors. If the Saints don't win home field advantage and have to play outdoors in January, the difference could be a Hartley 50+ yarder. You don't cut someone until you have to. Reis, Prioleau, Torrence, Charleston, or Daniel would be gone before Hartley in my opinion.

Payton is padding the deck here. Some people here have disagreed with me about how much the kicking game has cost us in the past. Carney has missed some this year and they may start giving Hartley some shots just to see where he is at. And maybe just maybe they do not want to let Carney go to one of our competitors and become our nemesis.

Re: Still keeping 2 kickers
Even though Carney has made field goals, I still think its time to let him go. The missed extra point really left a bad taste in my mouth. Kind of like eating black licorice. I agree with Paul, it's time to part ways with Carney to make room for another player. Lord knows we need some depth on the D line. Carney has served his purpose, it's now time to acclimate the young man and get this party started.

Re: Still keeping 2 kickers
I was impressed with Hartley last year. Carney is a good stop gap until he is healthy. Morestead has been a decent draft find as his punting and kickoffs are above average. I too am content with keeping Hartley on board until he gets back.

Re: Still keeping 2 kickers
The old man got the job done today. Nailed the 40 yarder down the middle with plenty to spare with the game on the line. I for one wasn't worried. That's the reason he's still on the team.

Re: Still keeping 2 kickers
I'm still all about letting Hartley take over the kicking duties. I still remember the JAX game, and I still think that Carney is on the take. Get rid of this guy immediately and let the young kicker do what he does. Especially now that we've got STL and TB coming up...I still think that Carney can't come through in the clutch. He's already missed 2 extra points and he can't kick on kick-offs. With this team that scores so much, to ____ with this +40 year old kicker. Still believe he has a gambling problem with Las Vegas. Send him packing.
