the runs were not designed to go outside tho

it was clear that turner was trying to run up the middle and only bouncing outside when he realized the DEs were crashing in and breaking containment

Agreed. When he did go up the middle Vilma met him in the hole. And Vilma won that battle. But Vilma and the others had a hard time bring him down in open space. And I see why Dunbar is just a backup. When he met Turner in the hole, Turner flat out ran over him. When will we get Scott F. back?

Good point. Not having our best DT affects the entire line.

Having Ellis may have allowed our D-line to play a bit wider, or those runs clogged up the gut may have become tackles, instead of Turner bouncing it outside.

And you can't deny Ellis's penetration disrupting the play from the start, not allowing the play to develop as easily, we probably didn't shift and stunt as much as we would had Ellis been in, and you can't ignore what his leadership brings to the entire line.

Yes the DE's (Charles slo-mo Grant in particular) certainly played badly, but not having Ellis affected the entire D-line.
