Are the Saints going through their slump?

I've read on another forum thread how the Saints are currently slumping now. I agree with that. Looking at the last few games, the Saints have turned the ball over and nagging injuries are playing a big part in our defense giving up yards (having no Sed Ellis helped Turner out a lot). Plus the linebacker play hasn't looked quite as sharp. Still the Saints still are finding ways to win, which is what good teams do. Knowing with all the mistakes that have occurred and such, it makes me feel good as a Saints fan to know that the potential for this team is incredibly high, and really I don't even think the Saints have come close to what they are capable of, especially with their talent.

BTW I'm abruslep, but when the database went down I lost my name, so I am this now.

Eight turnovers in two weeks. They have to tighten that up.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. We played some bad football the last 2 games. It's a testament to how good we are that we still won.

I think if we bring our A-game, not only can we beat anyone, we can destroy them.

The Carolina game worries me quite a bit.

8 turnovers in 2 weeks. Looks like the Saints of 2008.

Our defense has been keeping us in games. Hats off to Jabari Greer.

He gets my game ball.

From where I'm sitting it looks like a slump...although, they're having my kind of slump and they are still winning. It just looks sloppy.

I know that the Saints are suffering from a lot of key injuries now. After what Turner did to the Saints last night I am very worried about the Panthers run game next week. Stack the box and dare Delhomme to beat you.

Re: Are the Saints going through their slump?

I think i'll have to politely disagree. I don't think the Saints are in a slump. But I guess it's according to what your definition of slump is. To me a slump is when boneheaded plays and poor execution results in a string of losses. I think other teams are studying our game film and exploiting weaknesses. Of course some of these weaknesses are due to first string injuries of names like Ellis, Jamal, and Fujita. When brees gets mugged in the pocket and gives up a fumble, thats not exactly the definition of "slump". That means the defense is getting penetration.
It's not gonna get any easier from here on out. As long as the Saints are undefeated other teams are gonna be gunning for 'em with everything they got.
A slump? No. It just means some good teams are having some measurable success at trying to create turnovers in an attempt to turn the tide. And like I said, you're gonna see more of this as we play teams with losing records down the stretch. You're gonna see fake punts, trickery plays, and defenses concentrating less on form tackling and more on stripping the ball and disrupting Brees.

We're certainly not playing the kind of ball we were against the Eagles and Giants. That being said, I hope this puts the fear of God in the players and coaching staff to not be caught off guard by the likes of the Panties, Rams, and Bucs. I have a feeling SP and GGGGGGGGW will have the boys ready next week.

Re: Are the Saints going through their slump?

I agree with Saintsfan4ever, I don't look at it as a slump either. We have played a couple of quality teams, capable of making some plays and guess what? They did! The Brees sack and fumble was a fluke imo, not likely to happen very often but we do need to clean up the turnovers in general. The injuries have us a bit on our heels right now but hopefully we can get healthier over the next 3 weeks and have some of our people back in time for the big MNF match-up with the Pats.

These past two games gives us a bit of a reality check. It may just be what the doctor ordered. I tend to agree it will motivate GW and SP to inspire our team to do better. First test against Carolina!

Drew always throws INTs in bunches and strings together a couple of so so games. That his MO

The running game has saved the offense.

The defense is improved but wait till next years draft! A stamp has yet to be applied to this unit.

I hope it's a slump.

Our offense has been fine, but out defense has gone down a lot.
Maybe our defense has peaked, or maybe the game film has exposed
their weaknesses. I would like to see them get better against CAR.

Re: Are the Saints going through their slump?

I think Brees, and Payton nailed it- we are going to get the best of everyone. The media throws it in every teams face about our offense- The D's get tired of hearing it, and everyone wants to be the one to stop us.

That said, I think injuries are hurting us too. I think it is the combination!

We need to get to Tampa, and Rams fast, lol.

Our last 4 Games- an undefeated Jets- undefeated Giants- a very tough Miami team coming off a bye- and a very good Falcons team coming off a loss while facing losing the division quite possibly already.

We are getting the best from every team we play right now.

What do you guys think?

Yea, defensive slump. We've been giving up a lot of yards and points lately.
Luckily, our offense is not so much in a slump.

Re: Are the Saints going through their slump?

Agree with spkb. Not many easy games from here on out.

Carolina is desperate to save their season and now they have some hope and a little pride back. If they are smart they will stick with the run even if they get behind. JD won't cough up the ball if he doesn't have it. Home field advantage should give us the win this week, but it will be another tough one.

Tampa will be tough at home and pumped for a divisional game. NE has come on very strong after a rough start while Brady was getting his stuff back. Dallas has looked very good the last couple games. Atlanta was tough in the Superdome and will be tougher in the Georgia Dome.

If I had to put money down, I would say 14-2. Hopefully that's enough for HFA.

Re: Are the Saints going through their slump?

I do believe some teams may have at least somewhat figured out the Saints to a degree. The massive pressure that Brees is seeing right now is a big problem. I believe the Saints will start to counter that with a few more dump off passes to slow that down. Bushrod is still inexperienced and has been up and down. He probably needs a TE lined up next to him more often. I wouldn't say just yet that this is a slump, but there is now a lot of game tape for the opposing teams to look at. We all know the defense gets picked apart at times, but so far the Saints seem to make enough adjustments during games to at least slow that down. Missing key defensive players is starting to show in a bad way.

8 turnovers in 2 games? Slump may even be an understatement.

If you were slumping, that would equate to 2 losses...as it is, those turnovers were overcome. Turnovers...or simplified...**** happens. Teams that are slumping do not overcome adversity. Teams that are riding the crest of the wave don't let anything get in their way.

Write a letter to Archie or any other member of the 1-15 team...or any Saint team from around that era...they will tell you what slumps are all about.

Re: Are the Saints going through their slump?

It depends on your definition of slump.

Slump: A span of poor performance by an athlete or a team.

8 turnovers in 2 games is poor performance. Just because we won doesn't mean we played great.

Had we played well both of our last two games would have been major blowouts.

Yes, I think we are in a slump, which is a good thing considering we played our C or D game and still won. Imagine if we played our A game, or even our B game.
