TRADE TALK: Saints' officials have approached the Miami Dolphins about a possible trade for running back Robert Edwards, league sources said. Saints officials contacted the Dolphins in the past week to inquire about Edwards' availability as the club continues its search for a backup to starter Deuce McAllister. Veteran Ki-Jana Carter rushed for 94 yards on 25 carries in his audition for the job during a 24-10 loss to Miami on Thursday night. But Saints officials say they will continue to explore all options, including the waiver wire and a trade. "A trade is always possible," Saints general manager Mickey Loomis said. "But I prefer to wait and see what happens (with roster cuts) over the weekend. I thought Ki-Jana Carter looked pretty good (on Thursday night)." Edwards led the Dolphins with 56 yards on 11 carries Thursday night. He rushed for 108 yards on 20 carries last season after completing a comeback from a severe knee injury that sidelined him for three seasons. He has become expendable because of the emergence of rookie free agent Leonard Henry. Edwards and Henry are competing for the No. 3 spot behind starter Ricky Williams and backup Travis Minor. "I know there have been inquiries," Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt told South Florida reporters this week. "Teams know we have a couple of quality backs that can play in this league. I've been pleased with both guys (Edwards and Henry)." The Saints also have reportedly expressed interest in Buffalo's Sammy Morris, Green Bay's Lamar Smith and Washington's Ladell Betts. . . . . . . .
