Carney MUST Go
I'm sorry, I love the old dude, but when the coach doesn't have faith in you to make a kick from 49 yds and 48 yds respectively in the 4th quarter of an INDOOR game that is extremely tight, then you have no reason to be on the team. He has to go.
Hartley went 13-13 for us last year at the end of the season and has the leg to make the long kick. We are wasting a roster spot and with our injury depleted defense that is just unacceptable. |
Re: Carney MUST Go
I'm not sure it was because SP didn't have faith in Carney. I think that it was more of SP doing what SP does.

Re: Carney MUST Go
you might have a point

Re: Carney MUST Go
We are agressive...thats how we play.....we dont kick field goals..having said that ..lets cutt both kickers ...and let Brees kick..if need be...lol

And that Belichick call was just insane. They were far into their own side of the field. |
Re: Carney MUST Go
I couldn't agree more - if Carney doesn't have the range then let him go.

Re: Carney MUST Go
Two kickers... really 3
Carney - Field Goals & PATs Hartley - has he kicked in the Reagular Season Morestead - KO & Punter Not sure who actually handled the KO's in yesterdays game but some of them were really short... Can Morestead handle the FGs & PATs...would free up 2 roster spots and one ACTIVE |
Re: Carney MUST Go
[QUOTE=exile;176844] Just saying that I think SP would have gone for that 4th regardless of who the kicker was at the time.
[QUOTE] Oh Really? What about if we had Morten Anderson in his prime? Would SP have not kicked both of those 4th quarter field goals from inside 50 yds then? |
Re: Carney MUST Go
When we didn't go for that last field goal and then Morestead punted that ball through the back of the end zone I thought I was gonna throw a damn brick through the TV.

+1 We gained a lousy 15 yards of field position on that. I would have rather have gone for it on 4th down and missed... |
Re: Carney MUST Go
Wait a second. Hasn't it been necessary to have an extra place kicker due to Hartley's suspension and injury? Do you really think we should have cut Carney (pro bowl kicker) when Hartley returned with exactly ZERO game action this season?
We need the roster spot now in light of injuries, but I'm glad we had Carney. And if I'm correct about the play, we only needed a few yards anyway and needed the points. |
Re: Carney MUST Go
Isn't Hartley hurt?
|
Re: Carney MUST Go
Hartley has an ankle sprain and it is my belief Payton is hanging on to Carney for 2 reasons, 1.because of other teams need for kickers and 2. for letting him go in 2007.Now if the injuries continue to mount up, then I can see someone getting cut.

As for SP being SP, a good coach looks at 3rd and mid in no man's land and decides then if he is planning to go on 4th. I don't have a problem with SP extending his "4 down territory", but make two good calls, not 1 then a reaction |

Re: Carney MUST Go
Kickers are mentally unstable as it is. They are like golfers in some respect. If you kill their confidence or they lose it somehow they get a case of the yips and are just finished. Look at what happened to Mike Vanderjagt. Most reliable kicker in the history of the game and now he is out of the NFL because he lost it mentally. I'm not saying Carney is there, but I am saying Payton is putting him there.

Re: Carney MUST Go
Hartley was suspended for four games for steroids right? Shouldn't he be back now?

Re: Carney MUST Go
Everyone makes great points regarding this topic. I don't think Payton was going to kick that long field goal regardless of the kicker. In hind sight, he should have gone for the first. I believe the intention was to pin the Rams deep, so I have no idea what Morestead was thinking. Anything under 50 yards is in Carney's indoor range. The problem is anything over 40 becomes a crap shot for all kickers, and the way Bulger was picking apart the secondary, no way you give the Rams that short of a field.
Yes, with the mounting injuries it's very tough to keep both kickers. It would be an easy decision if Carney was doing bad, but the truth is he is having a very good consistent year. It would also be difficult to lose a very talented Hartley, as we all know he would be snatched up in a heartbeat. My guess if things get bad enough for roster spots, then Hartley is going to probably be IR'd with that so called ankle sprain that is showing up on the injury reports. |
Re: Carney MUST Go
Payton doesn't want to replace Carney because that decision didn't work out right the first time. It was necessary when Hartley was out for 4 games. But I'm still wondering why Hartley was a scrub when we picked him up off the street, yes he was perfect last season but he didn't look good in preseason as I recall. I don't believe Payton is sold on him right now. And yes the punt was terrible. I was surprised to see Moorestead not drop that punt inside the 20. He looked good on the kickoff to start the game but was short on kick offs the rest of the game.

Re: Carney MUST Go
Guys - I've got an idea. Sign a kicker that won't take up a roster spot. His name's Gus and he can kick it 100 yards straight.

Re: Carney MUST Go
This is in response to the comment's so many people are making about the call to go for it on 4th & 2 from the 28... Yes, i know majority would had punted, but u have 2 understand were he was coming from when he made that decission... Look, the Pat's defense could NOT stop manning on the last 3 drives, they ran up & down the field with ease. So with 2 min's laeft, he decided to go for it. NO, they did'nt get it, but i still believe it was not a bad call at all... Defense could NOT stop them, they were extremely tired & thought even if Indy did score, that they possibly get the ball back with a lil bit of time left to get down for a field goal. Unfortunatly it did'nt workout for them, but i do respect him.
So, like im say'n, nobody stop's to think about it, it was NOT a BAD play call at all. Now, im gonna say this & i DON'T care wut anyone thinks, but i know one thing is for sure & I know this for a fact.............................. ( Had The Pat's gotten that 1st down, EVERYONE would had said how GENNIUSS he is & just how awesome of a play call it was ) LOL, I know that for a damn fact & so does everyone else in the world... So thats my take on it, bottom line!!! Anyway's, lat's just get ready for TB & get back on track with our OFFENSE, deffinetly our TURNOVER'S & most important of all our HEALTH!!!
