Re: Must read for all Saints technical enthusiasts
That was enlightening Xan. Thank You!
I know it is not easy to fool a defense when the same is trying to fool you. Sean Payton has taken it to a new level. Seems Gregg Williams has that ability on the other side of the ball. I like to think he is going "Vanilla" until the post-season. There is something to be said for having talented personnel that can be coached but do not have a lot of film out there on them (is it the players or the scheme?) that can be plugged in and perform. Saints have multiple injuries but are 13-0. It may be all of that and something else..... Destiny? Did not believe in that a few weeks ago. A few weeks ago I never thought I would see the Saints in this position. So perhaps it is like Gumbo. A little of Dis and a little of Dat. The result though................................ Tastes sooooooooo good! |
I'm no one.

It seems like every player on the Saints has to know not only the playbook, which looks to be a massive compilation, but also know how to read defenses and adjust their role depending on what they see and be coordinated with the other 11 players.
If anything, this analysis offers a glimpse into why coaches like Payton and Williams make their units better. It's all in the details. |

Re: Must read for all Saints technical enthusiasts
I can now see Payton is a master of causing confusion and using misdirection/fakes/personnel to expose the defense. It started with the fake reverse to Reggie in the first season - now it's expanded to create long passing playings with single coverage for Brees to hit.
I'm glad we have good tight ends and fullbacks to carry out these assignments. In a way, Miller getting hurt was a blessing, because next year we should have Shockey, Miller AND Thomas at TE. |

Payton is a genius....I know I'm not the first person to say that, but it's true. I'm a Rugby player player still learning the intricacies of football, this article will help to change the way I watch football now. Thanks xan.
