Irvin Favre compliment and sig...

I played Amer. Legion baseball in Gulfport during the summer of '72 and Irvin Favre was the head coach. I played 1st base most of the year, (first time ever for me to play that position) and I was the 3rd pitcher on the team. I didn't pitch much as you only had a couple of games a week, and our other 2 pithchers were good. I did get in a few games during the season, but mostly just played 1st.

When the state tourney came around at the end of the season, I was forced into action. We had consecutive games for 4 straight days, so there was no avoiding having your 3rd pitcher start a game.

By the time my turn came around, we were 1-1 and fighting through the losers bracket. I found myself pitching against the...

you know what...this story is too long. Suffice it to say that I pitched a 2-hit shutout against Greenville that night, the favorite,...and then had to pitch the next day in the finals...the last 3 innings...after pitching 9 inninigs the night before. It was brutal. We lost.

Anyway, we got a certificate, and Coach Favre signed it and said something like, "you're a winner all the way...good luck in the future."

Whether you think you can or think you can't...you're right!

my first and only encounter with archie were in lafayette at cajun field years ago i think it was his rookie year for the saints ,my old man woke my ass up to go and was i ever glad. he threw passes to kids that morning and i caught my first pass from a pro. well that pass led me to play football for the next 10 years all the way thru college. thanks archie for the best years of my life. if anyone remembers burger chef and jeff days thats who was promoting the catching a pass from archie that morning.

Re: Hebert says it well

Catching a pass from Archie-- thats priceless, St Thomas. Was Saints Training Camp in Lafayette? So Burger Chef sponsored a promotion where kids could catch a pass from Archie, but who is Jeff? Did you play for ULL?

Thanks for the stories SaintLB. Always good, and dont worry about lenghth-- I'm passing time. You can tell Archie is a really good guy, the way he treats kids and regular schmos like you and me. enjoyed those much. I hope you still have the certificate from Irvin Favre. Im sappy, but that "you're a winner all the way" thing makes one a bit teary.

The only time I got close to Archie was at the (I need help here--) ?Riverside Hilton? Was that it? There was a club in '88 called the Who Dat Fan Club, and I think Pete Fountain was president. You got all kinds of neat stuff, key chains, that little white card, discounts from Travel-New-Orleans, etc. Well we had a party at the hotel ballroom--before the Broncos game?? , I think. Anyway Benson was there, and shook hands with the crowd, the Saintsations did a dance number, and then, of course
The Man himself--- Archie showed up to speak for our pep rally. I stood a few feet away, and was dazzled to see him, and also happy to see how the crowd reacted to him.

Also I was wearing a silly hat, and Moses grabbed my arm, and we did some funny dance. Saintsation Lori Carrol signed something for me. (the brunette with the hair down to her backside) I was completely in love with her.

I'm pretty sure it was the Broncos game--- because I remember it was a great weekend all around.

The team was sub par and the game was the worst loss I've seen. The fact that we were playing for HFA should have been motivational but even that didn't seem to put any fire under the Saints.
