Coach Sean Payton said his team will play all-out on Sunday at Carolina, regardless of what happens with the Minnesota Vikings tonight at Chicago.
The Saints can lock up the No. 1 seed in the NFC if Minnesota loses. But even more important right now for the struggling Saints is some positive momentum. "Our plan is to play this game just like it would be the last game to get in the playoffs," Payton said, adding that he thinks it's a good time for his team to travel for a road game to help it get re-focused after a two-game losing streak. The Saints (13-2) could have clinched the No. 1 seed with a victory over Tampa Bay at home on Sunday, but they coughed up a 17-0 first-half lead and lost 20-17 to overtime. Payton stopped short of calling that development a "positive," but he said it gives the Saints "an opportunity to correct some things before they matter even more." Saints are 13-16 all time against the Panthers.
We're also 18-24 all time in regular season finales. Of that number, we are 1-4 against the Panthers. We have not won a regular season finale since 2004 (beat Carolina). And we're 0-3 in season finales under Sean Payton. |
