Charles Grant mad at Saints fans!

Wow, how could we WHO DAT's boo our team?

"Right now, what's heartache for me ... when you walk off that field and you've got guys out there playing their balls to the wall, and you've got folks in the stands screaming and hollering, 'Y'all (expletive) suck,' you know, you don't do that," Grant said. "This team has worked harder than anybody I've been around for eight years. This group of men in the locker room, they work hard in the offseason. They do everything to be accountable to each other. Hey, look, we're 13-2 right now, we've still got a chance to go to Carolina and be 14-2. The New Orleans Saints ain't never been 14-2.

"I mean, we know what we have to do as a team. But stuff like that ticks people off. Players don't want to hear that after they got out there and played over a 60-minute ball game. Don't be a bandwagon (fan). Don't jump on and jump off. Don't do that. That ticks me off."

Maybe he confused "Y'all" with "You". That was the first game Grant has showed up since the first couple of games of the season. I'd rather see a drunk Bobby McCray on the field than Grant.

I agree with Grant that what a few badly drunk fan did was indefensible. On the flip side, now ha's mad. Good. If he stays that way, maybe he'll do his job.

Sometimes the New Orleans fans do get carried away....I'm a little disappointed in the fans.....I've always thought booing was classless, whether you are booing your team or an opponent. Just a total lack of class. However, if they were just yelling at Mr. Invisible then that could be considered acceptable.;)

Papa Voodoo 12-30-2009 01:26 PM

Re: Charles Grant mad at Saints fans!

Man, if they can't appreciate that this is not about them this year then tough. It's not all "internal"...not this time. Every year has been about the fans supporting and coddling the team. This year it's the fans that they are supporting.

Our hearts are one, Charles, don't worry. But, not expecting us to go bat sh** crazy losing to Tampa for HFA in the dome when they stink is Polianesque. How would you have reacted Mr. Grant?

I really think the team has not fully grasped the fact that Saints fans are not regualr fans and definitely NOT bandwagon fans. Most supported team with the worst record for decades is plenty proof of where our hearts are at. You get paid umpteen million dollars a year and you complain like your work is harder than ours...please.

Re: Charles Grant mad at Saints fans!

Wow.... This breaks my heart to read this article. I agree with Grant, the Saints have played as hard as they have all year and playing with as many injuries as they have, only to be boo'd walkin off the field. Do they think that is going to give the team motivation to improve themselves? Sure, there were a bunch of frustrated people in the stands. I'm sure there was a lot of alchohol in them. But to treat the best Saints team we've ever seen like this is unbelievable. After reading this I'm thinking that maybe it was a mistake to have home field advantage. I hope I'm wrong.

You got that right Papa Voodo. Saintswrath was not holding back. I take back what I said in my earlier post. It sounds like Grant is looking for someone to blame for his inadequacies. There were enough fans posting on that article who were there at the tunnel and did not hear what Grant said he heard. Now he is getting pummeled for his comments.

I definitely went into the wrong profession.

I get paid about one tenth or less what Charles or other pro athletes make, people stare and hover over me constantly, complain, threaten, go ballistic on a regular basis, even when I show up and work meticulously week after week and do a GREAT job, and I just take it, make some money and move on.

Blows my mind seeing someone who make MILLIONS complaining about a few drunk morons. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Personally I think the people who pay to go to the games can boo and ***** all they want. It's a right they have for buying a ticket. It's not the opposite like buying a ticket give you the "privilege" of seeing a football team or players.

Some fans are classless? Absolutely.
Would I act that way? absolutely not.
Can some fans act that way? Yes, they have every right.

Sorry Charles.

My 2 cents.

"real fans don't boo". now, where have I hear that before?

look, emotions are part of this game (even this msg board). People get carried away. it was disrespectful in terms of how much this team has accomplished in 2009 and I don't agree with it.

Grant is standing up for his team mates and had Drew said the same thing the reaction would have been different.

People have a right to react how they want. But that doesn't prevent them from being called an ****head.

Re: Charles Grant mad at Saints fans!

Being upset about one game, doesn't mean you are complaining about the entire season. What did they expect, everyone to clap, and run down to hug their necks? That's their mothers, and girlfriends jobs, to console them, not the fans.

People keep talking about setting the bar too high, well I don't play for the Saints, and I certainly didn't win 13 games, they did. They set the plate for this dinner, now don't get mad, if some of the guests are getting dissappointed by them serving up a tainted course.

I don't think I would be upset as a player, if my fans, are upset when we lose. It shows they give a damn. Bandwagoners, in my opinion, wouldn't care at all.

Re: Charles Grant mad at Saints fans!

I sit in the endzone next to the tunnel and I didn't hear any booing. I still saw people standing up and giving the players an ovation as they left the field but also if there were fans booing they have every right to. The dome has been sold out since 2006 so pretty much 85% or so of the fans there been having season tickets for at least 4 years. That's a nice chunk of money they have invested in the Saints in such a short time so yes, they have the right to boo when they don't get a quality performance. Myself personally, I didn't boo but I was very disappointed in the Saints 2nd half performance. I have been a season ticket holder for 13 years now driving from Houston to New Orleans and if I decided to boo the team I think I've earned that right.

skymike 12-30-2009 04:34 PM

Re: Charles Grant mad at Saints fans!

Im the voice of dissent on this one.

I dont boo anyone except kickers. Hell, I think we should boo ourselves for the lackluster noise in the Dome in the 3rd quarter. It looked like a lot of us partied too hard the night before, and noon starts are a bit early for us.

I'm not worried about how much money anybody makes. You know its like the song, "Money for Nothing." You should have learned to play that guitar... Like they do on the MTV..." All of us could have got off our butts, exercised more in high school, and made a million dollars too. It aint Charles Grants fault you cant play.

So, I guess my thinking is different here. I aint tellin nobody what to do, I'm just saying I dont. And the money is irrelevant. If you watch football, you're supporting it.

They're all just people to me. I got a kid playing football, I played myself, and when you know what they go thru, it gives you a different perspective. Every guy out there is somebody's kid. When my kid plays, you'd better not shout stuff at him, or you're gonna have a problem.

CG probably knows, having been in NOLA so long, there are a lot of good supportive Saints fans who are classy. He was just calling out that small minority that are passive/aggressive and making remarks like that. I don't have a problem with it.

Papa Voodoo 12-30-2009 05:20 PM

Re: Charles Grant mad at Saints fans!

I played and had both knees reconstructed. I have that inner perspective and I still think Charles is wrong. He can't do my job and I can't do his but by NO MEANS is his job any more important or stressful than ours. If Grant doesn't agree with that lets see what his thinking is when a fireman has to run INTO a burning building to save him and his family.

For 40+ years the swell had built up to the Tampa game for HFA and they didn't close it out. Kinda like punching a hole in a dam...lots of emotions poured out of everyone. Charles should understand that to some degree. It wasn't for the Wildcard game or an 8-8 record.

I don't want us to win the Superbowl just for myself this year. I want the Saints to win it for my deceased Grandfather who had season tickets since they became a franchise and they ALWAYS lost. I want them to win for my dad who religiously brought us to watch the Saints lose.

I want them to win for my friends who loved the Saints and wanted to see this come to fruition and have passed on. I want them to win because of the dozens of heart breaking losses we have supported our team through.

I want them to win for coming so close in '06. This is the time for the team to fight with every ounce of their being on every play and win a championship.

We have always supported our team. We will always support our team. But, damnit, they lose by not giving their all in the most important game the Saints ever palyed and we have every right to let loose on them. Saints fans have paid their dues and then some brother, believe that.

Lack of concentration. We were so close from winning that game. They needed to lose. Hopefully they'll learn a lesson. I don't think it's out of line to boo but saying "You f@#$@ suck" is imo.

I agree that his job is not any more important, in fact probably less important. I was addressing the "but he makes a lot of money" argument.

His job pays what it pays, thats the market--and until we all boycott football, they're gonna make those checks. I think their salaries are ridiculous too, but it doesnt pre-empt their humanity. Tiger Woods is human. I like him better knowing he is.

Kids in India making shoes for Nike think Firemen are overpaid, but no one stands outside burning buildings waiting to boo the firemen when they are unable to save somebody. "What do you mean you couldnt take the heat from that fire, you make ___ dollars!" "Boo, you &%$#!@ suck!" We should do this to doctors and lawyers. I never saw Grant say he thinks he's more important than you or me.

Every time Charles Grant lines up, a very large, talented, possibly angry man is lined up against him, and probably hits him in the privates whenever possible. Im guessing he tries hard on every play. I saw him in Mississippi, and he sure does sweat a lot. Just my observation.

But you know, I want the same things you want, and for the same people. I want the Saints to win for your grandfather, for Archie, for my friend who lost his house in Katrina, for the poor lady who sells pralines on LaSalle, for people in Shreveport who love the Saints and hear crap from Cowboy fans, for every little kid who got their heart broken following them, for the awesome people in MS who sat in the heat at TC, and the list goes on... I want us all to have a great celebration. This is my goal.

Im just not sure yelling blasphemies at the guys we're supposed to be rooting for is gonna help us reach that goal. Thats what the coaches are for. But I support your right to boo, or yell "you suck" if you want to.

We have been supporting the franchise for years, indeed, but bear in mind, most of these guys werent born when we 1st started watching the Saints. They're basically kids. ...and they're somebody's baby. Money doesnt change that.

I HAVEN'T HEARD THAT IN A LONG LONG TIME!!!

Personally I never boo. I just love my teams one way or another. I also don't do anything to people who boo. That's me, I know everyone feels different.

The only time I'll actually say something is when the athletes are amateurs, which means up to College, and I'll say something to people who boo kids and stuff. I think it sucks when people boo LSU etc. Beyond that, no opinion.

I do think people yelling "bleeping bleeps" suck. We have great fans but, as with any team or city, we have our garbage!!!!

Then again, I don't do anything about it.

I guess I'm the devils' advocate... great discussion on all sides.

Re: Charles Grant mad at Saints fans!

I'm just curious... Have any of you ever worked in the entertainment business? I reallize this is a sporting event, but the NFL is essentially a form of entertainment. The reason I ask is, have you ever went to see a band, and the sucked? How many boos did you hear in the audience? From people that couldn't play a guitar if they tried, or sing, or play drums, or any other musical instrument, other than a kazoo.

Saw a terrible comedian, an awful play, or movie? Was anyone booing, or yelling stuff then? My point is, that I'll bet that no one here, downing the people that did this stuff, hasn't done one of these things, at some point in their life.

I am a huge Nicholas Cage fan. I am also a huge marvel comics fan. So when I went and shelled out the cash at the theater, to see Ghostrider, you can imagine what I was saying while I was walking out. If Mr. Cage had been there, I would have probably called him a few names myself! That doesn't mean, that I am going to stop watching his movies, because of that one immense turd of a movie. And I don't remember him coming out crying about how everyone thought it sucked.

I'm sure someone is going to say that these two things have nothing to do with each other, but if you really look at it, they are exactly the same. And I have been booed before, and called names, because I've been a musician all my life. Did I stop doing it, because people didn't like it? No. But on the flip side of the coin here, if I didn't like people's abuse, because they didn't like what I did on stage, I also had the option to quit. Right?

Exactly bro! I played all over the state of Mississippi, when I lived there, and for the most part we got good responses, but sometimes I had to dodge beer bottles! That's part of the job, when it comes to a job, that has "fans". You can't cry about it. You buck up, or you find another profession.

$1 million per sack seems excessive, and to a guy making $45K and paying $100+ a ticket, it is unacceptable.
No one is doubting that the players work hard, but in most jobs we are judged by results, not effort.

Grant might need to accept the fact that HE was the one being booed, which gives him 2 options: play better or leave.

You're right. It is unacceptable to pay money to watch a guy making too much money. You should stop going to football games.

Write Tom Benson a letter demanding he gets control of salaries, and tell him you wont come back until he does. I'll go buy us some 7 dollar beers, while I wait for you to come back.

They ALL make too much money, and we are wasting our money. facts. You could save a kid in Nicaragua for what you pay to park.

I am confused a little on this topic. I'm not sure which group I fall into. First off...I hate it when people complain about their salaries. At the same time, I hate that they make so much money. The difference, I think, is that I realize that it is us, the fans, that dictate their salaries...so how can we complain...and just try to make people stop watching.

However, if you stop watching, that by itself would not put an end to it. You would have to stop buying the products they endorse...thus, lost revenue for the sponsors and pulling of their ads and it just trickles down from there.

What has me confused is where I fall. I do not go to many pro games anymore. I have never held season tickets. I am not much of a beer drinker...and I only buy cars as necessary.

I do, however, own a dish soley for the purpose of watching NFL football...and this is what has me confused. Does that make me guilty? I think not...because I'm not the one complaining about their salaries.
