OH MAN! This would be a great FA pickup.

Vince Wilfork says he'd be irked if New England Patriots franchise him - ESPN Boston

Wilfork, who is the team's top free agent, said he could imagine himself playing for another team.

That would definitely be a nice addition.

We can not sign him because of the final 8 rule.

There will be a "Final 8" rule in 2010.

The rule will restrict the final eight teams in the playoffs from signing free agents. The final four teams shall not be permitted to negotiate and sign any unrestricted free agent to a player contract except for players who acquired their status by being cut or were on the final four team when their contract expired. Playoff teams five thru eight get a break to sign one player with a salary of $4,925,000 or more and any number of players with a first-year salary of no more than $3,275,000 and an annual increase of no more than 30 percent in the following years.

There is a mechanism to permit the final eight teams to sign an unrestricted free agent for each one of their own unrestricted free agents who sign with another club as long as they don't spend more than what their own lost player received from his new club.

Wilfork is good, but too much $$$, we gotta lock up some of our other players.

In related news, I think the Pats defense has totally fallen apart without Seymour. It was so evident in the Ravens game yesterday. In hindsight that was a bad trade for the Pats. Yes they have draft picks to use but his absence totally wrecked their D this year.

It's funny how we obliterated the Pats pass defense, then Ravens finished the job yesterday obliterating the Pats run defense. Though Ravens did one better and took them apart in Foxboro.

Should be easy since we can't sign any free-agents of note.

The rule 8 issue probably will not be all that bad for the Saints. Honestly, I will need to study it more in the offseason. From the little I gather, is the Saints should be fine as long as long as the players that they project to cut, or lose to free agency, actually gets signed by another team. I would imagine that Grant and Bush will be victims, but not really sure what they would get from a new team. My interpretation is the Saints can go after someone for the same salary or less once the guys who are cut actually sign with a new team. Like I said, I will need to further study this wacky issue.

Basically , we can only sign one for the same money we lose one for.

Since I see no big money Saints free-agents leaving, I can't see us signing any big name guys.

And we can't sign any until after ours sign somewhere else. It may be the final week of free-agency before any of our guys sign elsewhere. By then all the top free-agents will be gone.

vINCE WOULD BE NICE BUT i AM NOT HOLDING MY BREATH. tHE PATS ARE SITTING GOOD TO SIGN HIM. cAPS WTF

Now GB has a bit of a problem cap wise at DT.

Ryan Pickett , NT, 6-2, 340, 30
and
B. J. Raji

IMO opion Pickett who salavaged his carrer in GB will not be resigned because of cap and the play of Pickett. Clancy and Pickett would form a great rotation at NT.

If not my second choice is to go smaller, taller and quicker

Tony Brown, Titans, 6-3, 290, 29

Tony is a very under rated DT in the NFL.

Both are very cap friendly compared to Vince.

Draft is loaded with good DT and NT also. From the first all the way through the 3rd or 4th rounds

Who exactly is supposed to benefit from this final eight rule? By what I read, it seems better
for the teams to just cut the players.

Daniel Snyder.

At least Jerry Jones made the final 8 so he won't have his billions to go willy-nilly free agent grabbing this spring.........

And to the poster who made the point about Seymour - excellent point. The Patriots shot themselves in the foot bad with that one. Till they realize the benefit of those picks they got, it might be 2-3 years from now, and they better hope Brady doesn't continue to decline or they will be a mediocre team rather than a playoff pretender.

Yeah, I don't see that as a real possibility. Now the boys that Hagan was pointing out look good, and the draft is fairly deep this year in DTs.
