We can not sign him because of the final 8 rule.

The rule will restrict the final eight teams in the playoffs from signing free agents. The final four teams shall not be permitted to negotiate and sign any unrestricted free agent to a player contract except for players who acquired their status by being cut or were on the final four team when their contract expired. Playoff teams five thru eight get a break to sign one player with a salary of $4,925,000 or more and any number of players with a first-year salary of no more than $3,275,000 and an annual increase of no more than 30 percent in the following years. There is a mechanism to permit the final eight teams to sign an unrestricted free agent for each one of their own unrestricted free agents who sign with another club as long as they don't spend more than what their own lost player received from his new club. |

In related news, I think the Pats defense has totally fallen apart without Seymour. It was so evident in the Ravens game yesterday. In hindsight that was a bad trade for the Pats. Yes they have draft picks to use but his absence totally wrecked their D this year.
It's funny how we obliterated the Pats pass defense, then Ravens finished the job yesterday obliterating the Pats run defense. Though Ravens did one better and took them apart in Foxboro. |

Re: OH MAN! This would be a great FA pickup.
The rule 8 issue probably will not be all that bad for the Saints. Honestly, I will need to study it more in the offseason. From the little I gather, is the Saints should be fine as long as long as the players that they project to cut, or lose to free agency, actually gets signed by another team. I would imagine that Grant and Bush will be victims, but not really sure what they would get from a new team. My interpretation is the Saints can go after someone for the same salary or less once the guys who are cut actually sign with a new team. Like I said, I will need to further study this wacky issue.

Since I see no big money Saints free-agents leaving, I can't see us signing any big name guys. And we can't sign any until after ours sign somewhere else. It may be the final week of free-agency before any of our guys sign elsewhere. By then all the top free-agents will be gone. |
