this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; What we have some slouch in Will Smith- 13 sacks this year. Yes that makes him 1.5 less than Allen. They better be ready to protect Favre from him- they gave up 34 sacks this year...

Will who? How dare you mention a defensive lineman who doesn't have a mullet!
Smith is much better all around DE in my opinion. Allen plays the run like his hairdresser knows the latest styles. |

Take away the Pack games and Allen is about as useless as Charles Grant

Re: All the talk about Allen...
Will Smith isn't quite the pass rusher that Allen is. He is marginally slower and his techniques are not quite as explosive, but he is 10 times the run defender and at sealing the edge than Allen. Allen's mediocre attention to anything beyond full speed ahead is masked by two very solid run D tackles and a speedy OLBer that covers the edge for him. He's nothing more than a one trick pony, although he performs that trick quite nicely. We couldn't afford Allen on our team at this stage in our defense. He'd be nothing more than a liability on the end compared to Smith.

Re: All the talk about Allen...
9 of allens 14.5 sacks came against 2 of the most sacked QBs in the league and he played them both twice
aaron rodgers who was sacked the most of any QB in the league at 50 total times played allen twice Jay cutler was the 7th most sacked QB in the league and also played allen twice not to mention matthew stafford also playing in that conference jared allen is a good pass rusher......but working against terrible offensive lines like the packers, lions, and bears who have a total of about 4 good offensive linemen combined is not exactly the greatest resume to have will smith goes up against pro bowlers nearly every week and still manages to come away with sacks jared allen would either get a couple sacks or disappear for the entire game will smith was a constant contributor on every snap of every game and despite doing his work against much tougher competition, didnt even get the nod for the pro bowl very insulting considering the NFC south DE that did make it had 7 less tackles and 3 less sacks |
