Re: 1st time in new orleans
Got that hotel.... good! now:
Just do the usual touristy stuff the 1st time, thats my suggestion. Even "hip" "undergroundy" people like the French Quarter, they just wont admit it. Bring lots of cash, you'll need it. Dont play with the "I know where you got them shoes" guy. Find a group of strangers to share the cost of it, and ride the mule/buggy deal around. Do a paddle-wheeler ride... check out the voodoo shops, look at all the weird people at Jackson Square. Do the Cafe DuMonde beignet thing. check out the riverwalk and moonwalk. See some plantation homes if you can. Musee Conti (wax museum) on Conti is not only a kickass museum, but a great primer on N.O. history. See Chris Owens show--- she's about 100, and still has the body of a 30 yr. old, and stop in every club on Bourbon St. including the gay stuff. Dont look like a tourist--- instead dress Saints, or Ghetto, or Biker, or Redneck, never like a yuppie tourist. Everyone who's ever been to N.O. goes to Pat OBriens & gets hurricanes. They taste like kool-aid, so drink lots of them and drink them fast--- they wont do anything bad to you. trust me. Then if you must get "local" the bohemian clubs are on Frenchman street over by Esplanade. Most of this stuff is considered touristy, but who shives a git what is supposed to be "cool?" "undergroundy" people live with their mama. Have fun and dont worry. Dont do anything wacky till you see somebody else do it first. This is your basic crash course in New Orleans. |
Re: 1st time in new orleans
I thought the rule was ... don't fight or urinate in public... everything else goes...

Re: 1st time in new orleans
Only been a few times but...
DO watch out stay in well lighted places & with a group (BUT isn't it like that in ay big city!!?) Dress Saints for sure - MOST people will dig that right there. DO not forget ot Lucky Pierre's |
Re: 1st time in new orleans
Alright my friend - best places to go and not eat "touristy" crap food and get shafted on drinks. You'll be in the mix of everything going on but be able to avoid a generic experience.
Good luck and GEAUX SAINTS!! Breakfast: Stanley in the French quarter at lafayette square $$ (awesome food - great view) Cafe Du Monde $ (you've gotta have beignets and coffee) Lunch: Mothers $$ (probably a line around the block, but the Debris Sandwich is RAD) Yo mammas - Fr quarter $ (awesome burger selection) Port of Call $ (What Yo Mammas is now, they were 10 years ago before they started to slack) Mr. B's Bistro $$ - Best BBQ Shrimp in town (real new orleans style) Bourbon House $$ - Great oysters and located at the bottom of your hotel Dinner: Cochon $$ NOLA $$$ (Emeril's good restaurant) Herbsaint $$$ Domenica in Hotel Roosevelt $$$ Drinks: Hotel Monteleone - The Carousel Bar $$ (yes it rotates) $$ (down from your hotel) Lucy's $ (packed w Saints fans before game and short walk to Dome) Walk up Poydras to the game and you'll see kids selling canned and bottled beers for $3 and plenty of bars w mixed drinks. I've been there plenty of times and the last time I was there I had 3 different guys on 3 different streets ask me that same thing. I was dressed in jeans and a t shirt once, dress pants and a collared shirt the next, and full out Saints gear the third. I was blown away by this statement and for the life of me, I can't figure out what the hook is. I even asked around with the local bartenders and waiters and no one gave me a straight answer. Can someone please tell me how this ends? Are they trying to bait you into saying your from out of town? Trying to get a buck off you? Trying to sell you drugs? By NO means did I look like I was from out of town, I looked like a total local. WTF? I'm still perplexed about this one! |

Re: 1st time in new orleans
I was in NO in 2003 last. Shoes guy didn't like it when my reply was "the $10 is in my pocket with some extra, you just have to try to get it out".

Re: 1st time in new orleans
I love Mother's. Great food, GREAT.
I like that name too. Me and my friend want to get #25 jerseys made, but instead of Bush, we are going to put "Shaved". HEH HEH HEH>>> |
Re: 1st time in new orleans
all great suggestions. I am adding Court of Two Sisters for Sunday Brunch. The food is 5 stars without the 5 star price.

Seriously everywhere they said is great, but stay off the side streets and keep to the lighted areas. Enjoy.

Re: 1st time in new orleans
OK, I just have to add this, all the restaurant advice is great, Mothers is perfect for breakfast, really need to check that out, but have none of you ever had a Muffaletta at Central Grocery?
They are the BEST! But of course you have to like muffaletta's... the atmosphere in the store is cool, old stuff from a hundred years ago on the shelves, you feel like you stepped back in time or something. They have been in business there since 1906. They are NOT open on Sunday's though. http://mw2.google.com/mw-panoramio/p...l/13212659.jpg |

Mike, if nicebush25 is a no-show you can bet I'll be decked out. Heading to the store after work to get ready for the weekend. It's hard to make a Honda Accord intimidating though.

Re: 1st time in new orleans
All those places listed above, I have enjoyed at some time or other. We were in New Orleans for the (ugh) Dallas game, and I really enjoyed Acme Oyster Bar again. They seem to be pretty consistent! Once I saw Marshall Faulk in there just before we beat the Rams in the playoff game. We went to K-Paul's the night before the Dallas game, and they seated Wade Phillips and his family right next to us for dinner. You just nevah know who you'll run into!
