Re: Conservative Playcalling?

We can't win the SB with that kind of offense. Payton and Brees have to be aggressive and take some chances. That's what got them into this position in the first place. They almost blew it yesterday and got bailed out by the defensive turnovers and great ST play (minus the Reggie muff on the PR). Part of the problem yesterday was that Minn felt they could contain our run game with their front 7, which they pretty much did, allowing them to keep both safeties back in shell coverage. This, compounded with Shockey's inability to run pass routes due to his knee, meant that both Colston and Devery could be double covered. We had to use max protect, which limited the number of receivers we could send out on routes. Nevertheless, Payton should have been passing on those third and shorts--where were the screens to the backs and wide receivers? And the double reverse simply killed one drive. He's got to call smarter game. It should help that we will be able to run better against Indy, making the play-action game more effective. And, hopefully, Shockey will be recovered enough to be effective in the passing game.
