Monkey off back
Now that the Saints have finally reached the Super Bowl, the pressure that has been building up has been relieved. Not the complete story, but one of the reasons I felt the offense struggled was because of nerves and anxiety. This game had so many more stress factors than any other team could have possibly had in the same situation. From 2006, the Saints and the city of New Orleans have been rebuilding together. All the pressure on the Saints players to come through probably was tremendously immense because of this. Even the great Drew Brees seemed to be rather nervous and uncomfortable due to the importance of the game, especially in key situations. Several of his passes at the end of the game didn't have the velocity and the accuracy/precision that his passes are normally accustomed to having. Some actually think he may have had arm trouble or something(possible, I hope not). Great football players have lead teams in Super Bowls to championships, conference championships. Great players have been forced to lead their team on game winning drives to championships. The truth is though, that no quarterback or team has had as much pressure on him/them in any game ever in the history of the NFL. Brees was certainly antsy, and I have doubts that anyone else in the situation wouldn't have been; whether it be Brady, Rothelisberger, or Joe Montana. It was rather amazing that they held up like they did. This was the beauty of it. The Saints have struggled at times. Yet when they needed to, they found a way.
Now we go to the Super Bowl(as the underdogs), with the monkey off of our back. Yes, Saints fans want the Super Bowl more than anything. Yes Drew Brees and the Saints still playing for a city trying to rebuild. The monkey is of their back though now. If the Saints lost, Saints fans would be disappointed. The season though would still have been amazingly fulfilling for a city that was longing a break. Hopefull now, the players can relax and go out an dominate the Colts. I truly believe the Saints have the potential to do this, and I can't way to see how the game unfolds. I know though that the Saints can bring home the Lombardi trophy to New Orleans. |

They can relax after the Super Bowl. The focus for the next two weeks is on beating the Colts, not sunning on South Beach.

Re: Monkey off back
Oh I agree, but they can finally get back to worrying about football instead of worrying about the impact of winning or losing a game that is more important than anything that anyone could possibly imagine. Yes the Super Bowl is more important about cementing legacy, being champions etc(football things), beating the hell out of the Colts. In the NFCCG, the Saints tried to show a city that things can turn around from the most devastating moments. A lot of pressure for anyone to take(I don't care who the player is or how "ice cold" he is). If the Saints would have lost the NFCCG, the city of New Orleans would have probably had the wind taking out of it. A lot of disappointment. I'm proud of the team for fighting and finding a way.

Re: Monkey off back
Not all of us were Ain'ts. It was just some of the fans.
We never were from my perspective. I can remember beotchslapping one guy at a game for being a douchebag about his own team. Some of us have been actual fans thru thick and thin since that first kick off return for a touchdown and would never turn against our own team. That would be spineless. |

Re: Monkey off back
The term Ain'ts is never gonna leave the Saints. It's impossible. It's there for the same reason we call the Vikings the ViQueens or the Falcons the FoulClowns. The real beauty is that when we hear the term Ain'ts from now own, it won't pack the punch it once did. Every football fan will now know that the Ain't can turn to Saints very quickly. We may go on to win the Superbowl, we may go on to lose it. We may go on to win the next 5 super bowls. Every team goes through bad years though eventually. And when we do, we will know that the franchise can pick itself back up again and return to winning. The Saints have finally shown the world that they are perfectly capable of getting to the promised land. That in itself is something to take pride in. The perception has changed.
