Monkey off back
Now that the Saints have finally reached the Super Bowl, the pressure that has been building up has been relieved. Not the complete story, but one of the reasons I felt the offense struggled was because of nerves and anxiety. This game had so many more stress factors than any other team could have possibly had in the same situation. From 2006, the Saints and the city of New Orleans have been rebuilding together. All the pressure on the Saints players to come through probably was tremendously immense because of this. Even the great Drew Brees seemed to be rather nervous and uncomfortable due to the importance of the game, especially in key situations. Several of his passes at the end of the game didn't have the velocity and the accuracy/precision that his passes are normally accustomed to having. Some actually think he may have had arm trouble or something(possible, I hope not). Great football players have lead teams in Super Bowls to championships, conference championships. Great players have been forced to lead their team on game winning drives to championships. The truth is though, that no quarterback or team has had as much pressure on him/them in any game ever in the history of the NFL. Brees was certainly antsy, and I have doubts that anyone else in the situation wouldn't have been; whether it be Brady, Rothelisberger, or Joe Montana. It was rather amazing that they held up like they did. This was the beauty of it. The Saints have struggled at times. Yet when they needed to, they found a way.
Now we go to the Super Bowl(as the underdogs), with the monkey off of our back. Yes, Saints fans want the Super Bowl more than anything. Yes Drew Brees and the Saints still playing for a city trying to rebuild. The monkey is of their back though now. If the Saints lost, Saints fans would be disappointed. The season though would still have been amazingly fulfilling for a city that was longing a break. Hopefull now, the players can relax and go out an dominate the Colts. ![]() |
