By Danny Cox - What a week it has been since the New Orleans Saints defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the NFC Championship for their first ever trip to the Super Bowl.
The Saints made the cover of Sports Illustrated. A lawsuit laid down by the NFL tried to hinder local retailers from using ther business to support the Saints and get the city ready for the big game. Dori Monson, a Seattle radio personality, tried to take down the accomplishments of the Saints while also mocking Hurricane Katrina and its victims.i The lawsuit handed down by the NFL was explained allowing local retailers to go back to business. A Super Bowl prediction was made twelve years ago for this very game. Wow, that's a lot to happen in the course of just five days and we've still got an entire week to go before the game. This week is Super Bowl Week for all the players and they will be practicing, giving interviews, going over plays, attending meetings, and dealing with everything that comes along with being a participant in the biggest NFL game of the season. Every single sports writer and television station will be breaking down the game this week and analyzing the chances that the Saints and Indianapolis Colts both have of winning Super Bowl XLIV in Miami. There will be breakdowns of every position, how the players perform under pressure, and so much more that you couldn't possibly even think of. My biggest thought when looking at this game though is that this is the first time in franchise history the Saints have ever made it this far. Needless to say but that's a lot of pressure in itself. With that I wonder...how have other first-timers in the Super Bowl fared when trying to win a championship? Green Bay Packers * First appearance: Super Bowl I * Result: Won 35-10 over the Kansas City Chiefs * Overall Record: 3-1 Kansas City Chiefs * First Appearance: Super Bowl I * Result: Lost 10-35 to the Green Bay Packers * Overall Record: 1-1 Oakland (Los Angeles) Raiders * First Appearance: Super Bowl II * Result: Lost 14-33 to the Green Bay Packers * Overall Record: 3-2 New York Jets * First Appearance: Super Bowl III * Result: Won 16-7 over the Baltimore Colts * Overall Record: 1-0 Baltimore (Indianapolis) Colts * First Appearance: Super Bowl III * Result: Lost 7-16 to the New York Jets * Overall Record: 2-1 Minnesota Vikings * First Appearance: Super Bowl IV * Result: Lost 7-23 to the Kansas City Chiefs * Overall Record: 0-4 Dallas Cowboys * First Appearance: Super Bowl V * Result: Lost 13-16 to the Baltimore Colts * Overall Record: 5-3 Miami Dolphins * First Appearance: Super Bowl VI * Result: Lost 3-24 to the Dallas Cowboys * Overall Record: 2-3 Washington Redskins * First Appearance: Super Bowl VII * Result: Lost 7-14 to the Miami Dolphins * Overall Record: 3-2 Pittsburgh Steelers * First Appearance: Super Bowl IX * Result: Won 16-6 over the Minnesota Vikings * Overall Record: 6-1 Denver Broncos * First Appearance: Super Bowl XII * Result: Lost 10-27 to the Dallas Cowboys * Overall Record: 2-4 Los Angeles (St. Louis) Rams * First Appearance: Super Bowl XIV * Result: Lost 19-31 to the Pittsburgh Steelers * Overall Record: 1-2 Philadelphia Eagles * First Appearance: Super Bowl XV * Result: Lost 10-27 to the Oakland Raiders * Overall Record: 0-2 San Francisco 49ers * First Appearance: Super Bowl XVI * Result: Won 26-21 over the Cincinnati Bengals * Overall Record: 5-0 Cincinnati Bengals * First Appearance: Super Bowl XVI * Result: Lost 21-26 to the San Francisco 49ers * Overall Record: 0-2 Chicago Bears * First Appearance: Super Bowl XX * Result: Won 46-10 over the New England Patriots * Overall Record: 1-1 New England Patriots * First Appearance: Super Bowl XX * Result: Lost 10-46 to the Chicago Bears * Overall Record: 3-3 New York Giants * First Appearance: Super Bowl XXI * Result: Won 39-20 over the Denver Broncos * Overall Record: 3-1 Buffalo Bills * First Appearance: Super Bowl XXV * Result: Lost 20-19 to the New York Giants * Overall Record: 0-4 San Diego Chargers * First Appearance: Super Bowl XXIX * Result: Lost 26-49 to the San Francisco 49ers * Overall Record: 0-1 Atlanta Falcons * First Appearance: Super Bowl XXXIII * Result: Lost 19-34 to the Denver Broncos * Overall Record: 0-1 Tennessee Titans (Houston Oilers) * First Appearance: Super Bowl XXXIV * Result: Lost 16-23 to the St. Louis Rams * Overall Record: 0-1 Baltimore Ravens * First Appearance: Super Bowl XXXV * Result: Won 34-7 over the New York Giants * Overall Record: 1-0 Tampa Bay Buccaneers * First Appearance: Super Bowl XXXVII * Result: Won 48-21 over the Oakland Raiders * Overall Record: 1-0 Carolina Panthers * First Appearance: Super Bowl XXXVIII * Result: Lost 29-32 to the New England Patriots * Overall Record: 0-1 Seattle Seahawks * First Appearance: Super Bowl XL * Result: Lost 10-21 to the Pittsburgh Steelers * Overall Record: 0-1 Arizona Cardinals * First Appearance: Super Bowl XLIII * Result: Lost 23-27 to the Pittsburgh Steelers * Overall Record: 0-1 New Orleans Saints * First Appearance: Super Bowl XLIV * Result: TBD * Overall Record: TBD Not counting the Saints' appearance, the 27 first time teams are 8-19. Not a very promising outlook if you're relying a lot on how much hsitory plays into future events. At least the Saints were able to get out of the grouping of five that had never made an appearance in the Super Bowl at all. Now the only four remaining teams yet to make it to the big game are: * Cleveland Browns * Houston Texans * Jacksonville Jaguars * Detroit Lions Plenty more to come this week Saints' fans so be on the look out for stats, commentary, news, coverage, and my final prediction on the game. There is also this little thing called "the odds". It's time for the ball to bounce our way.
