Ray Edwards says he would have sought revenge for Favre

Posted by Mike Florio on February 12, 2010 11:49 PM ET
Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards says he didn't know that the Saints were pounding quarterback Brett Favre during the NFC title game.

And Edwards says that, if he had known, he would have done something about it.

"Taking those hit that he took [against New Orleans] I wish I would have known that they did that because I don't really watch the offense," Edwards told Paul Allen and Paul Charchian of KFAN on Friday, per Judd Zulgad of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "I would have sure done the same thing to [Saints quarterback Drew] Brees because that wasn't right."

Edwards' position marks a dramatic change in his attitude toward the team's starting quarterback for the 2009 season. Before Favre unretired for the second straight year, Edwards went on the record to say he didn't want him on the team.

Now, Edwards is among those who want Favre to come back for another year.

"Definitely, I think he has the ability [to return]," Edwards said. "Now OTAs and training camp, maybe not. But come the start of the season, I'm pretty sure there wouldn't be a problem with that with most guys and we'd love to have him back if that's the case."

And if, as we believe, the Vikings will open the 2010 season with a return to the Superdome, Edwards might finally get a chance to do that which he would have done if he had known what the Saints were doing to Favre.

Can I get a "brother, please!"? So you're too busy reviewing strategy to watch the offense, but you didn't notice your star quarterback, best player, and ONLY hope for getting to your first Super Bowl constantly being helped off the field, retaped, and attended to by trainers? :^/ Plus, like the commenter said, if he COULD have sacked Drew, he WOULD have.

I don't want to put words into his mouth...just thinking out loud here...but I'm thinking that most of the punishment suffered by Favre will never be shown in the box scores. In other words...they weren't sacks. I'm guessing he's saying he could have put in some late hits on Brees if he would've known.

I'm not saying that the Saints were dirty. I didn't think that after the game...until people started saying it. They did what they had to do to win...imagine that. Vikings didn't appear to want it as bad as the Saints, IMO.

Anyway...I don't think dirty and football should ever be in the same sentence...unless you are saying something like "playing dirty is part of the game." I'm sure every one of us who played have been taught something dirty. What's the saying..."It ain't cheating unless you get caught."

Man...am I rambling this morning, or what?

The talk of the Saints being a dirty team has really started circulating. I was trying to think back and sort it out. Is what I think of as aggressive play really dirty? I will let you know it was not a decision they made to cut Brees some slack, if they could have gotten to him...they would have.

Well, I've never played (unless flag football in grad school counts), so I don't know. Are players really THAT oblivious to what's happening on the field when they're not in? The offensive players didn't tell him? He didn't peek up at jumbo-tron when the crowd roared? It seems implausible to me.

I played....not at that level so I can't say. But I know I was always aware of what was going but we weren't receiving photos to review and studying, we were watching. These guys are always sitting at the back of the sideline studying with people from the D line for example...but it still doesn't diminish the fact that regardless of what was happening on offense if they could have sacked Bress 30 times they would have.

He's a DE--- what pictures is looking at?

Is he saying he didn't give his best effort? that's why he didn't get to Brees, but would have if he had seen Brenda getting hit?

or is he saying he should have intentionally tried to hurt another player after the whistle?

But the biggest question is--
who cares what this 3rd place loser says about a game 3 weeks ago?

Who cares is correct Scott. I didn't even realize he played in that game anyway. Talk about SHUTDOWN. Try making some plays Ray Ray then you wouldn't have to make up such trash to hide your ineptitude.

He came into the game as the threat and ended it as the sheep.

Exactly. Stinchcomb owned him all game long. He would have never gotten to Brees anyway. Edwards had the game of his life against the Cowboys, but couldn't follow it up since he was a no-show against the Saints. Jog on, Ray Edwards. Jog on!

The Saints defense is hard-nosed, aggressive, take no prisoners. If that's dirty, then Pittsburgh, Chicago, Minnesota, and a host of other teams have dirty defenses. Ray Edwards is whining because he and his team were not tough enough to pull out a smash mouth game in the Super Dome. And because their Moses-in-the-Arctic quarterback proved to be another in a long line of Vikings choke artists. All this dirty team talk is nonsense. The Saints -- and the Vikings -- are tough minded. But the Vikings weren't hard-nosed enough to do what they needed to do in the Super Dome, and they paid the price for it.
