Free Agent Series: Should the Saints re-sign Pierre Thomas?


Free agency is all set to begin a new year in the NFL on March 5 and the world champion New Orleans Saints have a bit of work to do. There isn't a lot of things that need to be done, but a number of names are on the list as restricted or unrestricted free agents.

Should the Saints get an offer on a restricted free agent (RFA), then they can either choose to match it and keep the player or not match it and lose the player. Losing the player means.......

this cat is so legit, don't make a mistake and let him go. i really think hes more valuable than bush. he's a big bruiser in a little mans body. has great hands, can return kicks, is a little fragile but not as much as bush. has awesome balance. find a no.32 pick in the draft that has all this then let him go.

I know the question itself is silly...but it's sort of like a series I'm running and going through all the free agents the Saints have, restricted and unrestricted.

Gonna touch on the contracts of Bush and Charles Grant as well. It'll run the rest of this month.

Pierre?? Yeah, give the dude the money he deserves.

PT is a true keeper. The Saints should have no problem keeping him on the team. He is only a restricted free agent, I really doubt anyone is going to break the bank for him. He is a good back but has not been a big time money back yet. He was banged up much of the season, did play exceptionally well when in there, but still has a history of not being a full time guy. His value is clearly as a role player with the Saints, he will get the opportunity to continue.

Still can't figure out why Pierre wasn't drafted originally. His Understudy, Rahard Mendenhall was taken by Pittsburgh. Anybody share some light on this

My guess is that Thomas and Mendenhall were sharing carries when Thomas left Illinois. His numbers weren't overly impressive honestly when he left because of the dual-back system.

Mendenhall on the other hand had a monster last season in college as I can recall meriting his pick by Pittsburgh.

PT is an excellent football player...

a role model on hard work and perseverance...

so there are three only three questions...

what will the market bear?

what will the other back compromise?

what will the draft afford?

The Saints won't let the best RB on the team slip away. Mickey Loomis has done a fantastic job in the front office with keeping players around that have strong work ethic, good character, and most importantly, great field production. I don't see Pierre breaking the bank, but he is definitely due a substantial pay raise. He has done nothing but produce when he is on the field and he has earned everything coming to him.

I think its the whole obsession with measurables problem.
Not very big, but big enough.
Not very fast, but fast enough.
Not super impressive on tape, but good enough.
Not a big name football factory, but good enough.

And as someone mentioned he split carries with Mendenhall so no one was sure he could handle full time NFL RB duties.

On day 1, he was no better than that prima donna we drafted from tOSU. But he worked his butt off every day and got better and better.

In my opinion, he turned mediocre talent (by NFL standards) into above average talent by busting his butt every single minute in practice.

He did it the old fashioned way. He earned it.

I think that if he wants too much money then let him walk. He played very well for a little bit of money.....it is time to pay the man, just not too much.

I'm a loyal Pierre fan. Keeping someone like him around is a no brainer to me. He is yards after the catch, tackle attempt... hell, he gains yards from the second they hand him the ball. To tackle him hurts, I assure you.

No doubt - He is a keeper. Good heart, good legs, takes a hit - delivers hit & does not get tackled much by the first guy

coming from someone who didnt have a lot of respect for pierre thomas, i believe we should keep him because he is our best back right now

he breaks more tackles per game than any running back i see and has improved a lot on carrying the ball correctly and holding onto it tight

as of now i really dont see a lot of improvements that he can make and i still dont believe he increased his squats that much or whatever somebody said this offseason but the dude is a baller

he deserves a new contract

Pierre Thomas is one of the best backs in the league, you definitely don't lose him. He gets 5.4 yards a carry; better than Adrian Peterson and close to Chris Johnson. The amount of carries is the only thing that separates them; and thats because we have a good RB core.

I think he's our 3rd most important free agent to re-sign.

1. Jammal Brown
2. Jahri Evans
3. Pierre Thomas

And I know he's not a FA, but re-doing Brees' contract is a must. I can see Brees taking all of Grants 2010 money, and probably most of Reggies too.

he doesnt get to ask.. he is a restricted FA; the saints more then likely will place the 1st n 3rd round tender on him and let him talk to other teams; if the other team signs him the saints can match and automatically win or can let him walk and take the 1st n 3rd round pick

are you serious... I won't even vote this is so stupid.

Although we are going to have to make room in our backfield for LT... he's coming, for some reason I think he is going to be a Saints. Brees may have already spoke to him last off season.

Not to mention a lights out passing game. It was the Thomas extra effort yards that lit a fire under us early in the 2nd quarter. But he has run like that all year for us. He runs hard and breaks lots of tackles doing it and "rarely" puts the ball on the ground. He's a good back and fits well into our schemes. Pay the man.

we need more of a pounder than another finesse back. l.t. would be another national attention getter but lock up p.t. first. i really think payton loves hamilton. so he won't be going away.

It's all about the fight in the dog. Sign the 3rd most effective RB in the League last season and move on to more pressing problems.
