INDIANAPOLIS -- An NFL spokesman says the league could change its overtime format for playoff games at a meeting next month.

Greg Aiello said Saturday that under the new format, both teams would get the ball at least once unless the first team with the ball scores a touchdown. If the first team with the ball makes a field goal and the other team ties the game, action would continue until a team scores again.

Under the current rules, the first team to score wins.

The debate about the rule gained steam after the NFC Championship Game, when New Orleans beat Minnesota 31-28 in overtime and Brett Favre's Vikings never got the ball in the extra period. Under the proposed rule, Minnesota would have had another possession because it didn't allow a touchdown.

seriously, i think everyone needs to get off of favres ***...i bet you this article (or proposed change) wouldnt exist if the saints didnt touch the ball in OT.

I am so ***king sick of hearing about this. ***king crybabies, get over it! WE WON THE SUPER BOWL! And because Princess Favre got his ass handed to him by our "degenerate" team, they want to change the rules to ensure this NEVER happens again!! ***K YOU NFL!

nobody mentions that favre had the chance to win the game at the end of regulation and ****ed up yet again

the game was going to end with the saints on top no matter who got the ball in overtime. brett favre didnt earn the victory. the vikings didnt win the game in regulation because of their turnovers.

they stunk all game and couldnt hold the ball....we mightve scored even earlier had the vikings gotten the ball in OT because they played a full 4 qtrs and the vikings still couldnt figure out how to hold the ball

I'm not really a fan of the current overtime rule, but I hate the idea of "having to score a touchdown" to win. The sad thing about this is that it finally gets brought up when Favre gets beat because of it; ****ing media *****s.

the game ends when the offense scores a TD? what happens when the defense scores a TD? do they get the ball back or does the other team get a chance?

why are they taking field goals out of overtime? if i remember correctly there were several games last season that were won by field goals in regulation....why should they be taken out of overtime?

thanks ace, its the crybabies in pusurble again crying. well i'm telling you this thing will never change. they are so stuck up bretts bahonky all you see is there toes stuck out. i think everyone would love to see a change in the OT rule but they vote and it stands like it is because they say theres no other way better.

I really hope Favre comes back and Minn gets screwed again- like someone posted months ago- why are they surprised Favre beat Minnesota; he has been doing it for years.

The commissioner, Roger Goodell has already said there will not be any changes to the overtime rule. This unnamed league spokesman is only stirring the pot. The rule should be consistent , regular season and playoffs and its fine the way it is. And there isn't a signifigant difference to winning the toss and winning the game, its like 52% of those that win the toss and get the ball first win the game. Let the crybabies cry.
