All the talk going on lately is about free agency and what players may be coming or going. If people aren't discussing that then the topic of conversation is that of the NFL Combine. So we all want to know what stars are moving and which college stars are ready for the big time.
That leaves smaller stories for each team to mostly be talked about among the staff, coaches, players, and fans. One of those stories in New Orleans is what do to with defensive end Charles Grant? Grant has truly become an expendable part of the defensive line over the past couple years due to his production going way down and his inability to stay healthy at all. This season he had a few fill in for him when he went down such as Bobby McCray and even Jeff Charleston without missing so much as a beat. It goes to show you that he is not one of those on the Saints that is irreplaceable. In 2007, Grant and the team agreed on a seven-year contract extension worth $63 million and $20 million in guaranteed money. His numbers and playing time have not been nearly worth that type of money and my honest opinion is that he isn't worth what he's due to make just over the next two years alone. The 2010 season would see the Saints pay Grant $7.6 million but then see his salary cap total balloon up to $13.3 million in 2011. read full story here Last edited by Saintswrath; 05-05-2010 at 05:31 PM.. |

Wow. Yeah, he was NOT worth that contract at all. Dump him, and give that money to D-sharp. He actually deserves it. |

Re: Do the Saints need Charles Grant?
I'd say we should keep him UNTIL we find a suitable replacement in the draft. If we do keep him, I think it's safe to say this will be his swan song season with us. No chance he gets $13 Million two seasons from now. He is actually very good when teams run at him. He just doesn't get to the quarterback. It always seemed like he'd be better suited to play DE in a 3-4 to me because of his size.
He is listed at 285 lbs, but there is just no way. He is closer to 300 lbs. 5.5 sacks last year isn't horrible but it's not $7MM good either. Plus you have to factor in the injuries. Two torn triceps in two season's and his age are working against him. But we really don't have any other DE that are as stout against the run as he is unless they plan on moving Hargrove over to end. |

Re: Do the Saints need Charles Grant?
Until we find somebody to replace him we still need him. And if he plays this year then we need him to show up. Figuratively speaking.

Re: Do the Saints need Charles Grant?
Simple. We draft a DE to replace him with, or we find one via free agency. No way Grant deserves
the 6.5 this coming season. Keep McCrary, and alternate with the rookie. He will not be missed. |

Re: Do the Saints need Charles Grant?
charles grant stops the run better than any other DE we have on the team.....including smith
he will probably never get to the QB without some help but his force as a run stopper is undeniable it was obvious how important grant was when we were forced to play with only mccray out on the edge because our opponents knew exactly where to go id say keep him and draft a young DE that can also stop the run but knows when to call it quits at the drive thru |

No.
Couldn't stop the run with him and couldn't stop the run without him. Pass rush is not even debatable |
