Anderson as Brees backup?

Browns release QB Derek Anderson

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Quarterback Derek Anderson's uneven five-year stint with the Cleveland Browns is over.

The team released the one-time Pro Bowl quarterback Tuesday, one day after the Browns acquired backup Seneca Wallace in a trade from Seattle.

Anderson made the Pro Bowl in 2007 when he threw 29 touchdown passes and led the club to a 10-6 record. However, his promising career has been in a tailspin ever since. He lost his starting job to Brady Quinn last season, got it back when Quinn was injured but then played poorly.

The 26-year-old Anderson spent five seasons with Cleveland, which claimed him off waivers from Baltimore in 2005. Anderson was due a $2 million roster bonus March 19 and his salary was set for $7.45 million in 2010.

"I want to thank Derek for everything that he gave to the Cleveland Browns organization over the last five years," coach Eric Mangini said in a statement. "He did everything we asked of him and it was a pleasure to coach such a competitive person. I want to wish him all the best in the future."

Anderson passed for 3,787 yards in 2007, tossing 17 of his 29 TD passes to wide receiver Braylon Edwards, whom Cleveland last season traded to the New York Jets. Blessed with one of the NFL's strongest arms, Anderson was never able to duplicate the success he attained in '07.

It's still unclear what direction the Browns will go at quarterback. Quinn hasn't lived up to expectations and Wallace, who worked with Cleveland president Mike Holmgren with the Seahawks, may not be ready to start. Holmgren said last week that the team was actively looking for a quarterback but did not specify if that meant in free agency or via trade.

The Browns also have 11 picks in April's draft.

I'd like this guy to back us up instead of Brunell. What would the price be ya'll think?

W.T. Sherman is my favorite General. After all he did order Atlanta to be burned to the ground.

It was mildly critical of the son of the man who took me to my very first New Orleans Saints game way back in '67, so I changed my mind.

Anderson (Unlike Delhomme) showed via his exiting comments from Cleveland that he is Classless and arrogant... Not the kid of guy we need

I would have been pretty classless if I got jerked around like Anderson did in Cleveland also. He has shown the he has tremendous ability throwing the ball, unfortunately that ability is to throw the ball to the other team as well. I think if he learned from Drew and Sean he could make a great back up and I would rather have him than Delhomme. I don't think it is realistic for him to think he would be a starter anywhere that I can think of, but perhaps he is delusional.

disagree

the low class fans booed him when he got hurt and called for Quinn with every incompletion. What's he supposed to do, pull a Jake and say he loves the organization and fans that never supported him?

If we're going to bring somebody in, that person needs to have an upside going forward.

Do we really want a guy who, #1. Hates the Saints, and has made it very apparent, and #2. Promised his undying loyalty to one of our division rivals.? I think not. Let him go somewhere else. He HAD his chance to start for the Saints, and he got beat out by Brooks. Put all the blame you want on Haslett, but MAYBE, just MAYBE, he blew it his damn self.

I remember Jake's inconsistency, more than I remember his upsides. He tore the Cowboys up in the Christmas game, back in 99, and then sucked it big time the following week. I have no faith in this guy, at all, or anyway.

Anderson isn't going to be a back up guys. Too many teams needing potential starters, i.e. Arizona, Seattle, Rams, Raiders, hell even Tampa Bay might be interested in pushing their second year rook, for playing time.

Agreed and thanks ya'll for posting some facts and not comfort, feel-good thoughts about JD being from LA.

Best thing and hardest thing is for Saints scounts to find that young, cheap, QB with potential that they can mold .

He looked pretty good that other season for the Browns and I think the Saints could bring out his talent. But Payton knows best, he's the QB guru.
