Re: Back-up QB options?

I think Chase needs to get his shot this year. If not, one more year to learn. Brunell is a good guy, but he's finished. anybody can see that...

Re: Back-up QB options?

Agree 100%. Brunell is done. Give Chase some shots. That Carolina game was pathetic!

lmao garcia over brunell

you guys are goofy

judging brunell on 1 game against a top defense with all of our backups in.....shame on all of you

Re: Back-up QB options?

After Brees I htink Chase should get his shot... BUT I would not mind finding one of those diamonds in the rough to keep for later

Re: Back-up QB options?

I don't know if you guys noticed or not, but Jevon Sneed entered the draft this year. I'm not sure if he's got the goods for the NFL, but he might be a good late-round pick-up for a project for some team.

Re: Back-up QB options?

What about Case Keenum?....he played in a pro style offense..maybe we
could get him the later rounds..

It should be shame on you for thinking Brunell has ANYTHING left in the tank. If he does, it's only fumes.

After being let go by the Jags and the Skins and the way he has played in preseason and regular season, what makes you think he does?

No thank you. I would still rather have Major Applewhite than Chris Simms, he is a joke

for the past 2 seasons he has been in our system under one of the best QB coaches in the entire league under the best offensive system in the league

for the past 3 seasons he hasnt gotten to play with starters for a single game

every pass he has thrown has been with backups in the game

except for last season, every season he has played he has never thrown more INTs than TDs and in fact averaged almost twice as many TDs per season than INTs

dude is a quality vet that can teach as well as play. he has been in the league for a long time and has seen everything we could imagine.

He can teach, but he sure as hell can't play anymore.

Re: Back-up QB options?

NFL Videos: Peppers INT

watch this real quick and tell me who jamar nesbit and zach strief blocked.....tell me if lynell hamilton came back towards the ball

and tell me why the heck bushrod was the only one who did the right thing on that play

strief screwed up terribly.....peppers stayed home so strief's job would be to engage him so he cant make the tackle...in this case peppers didnt have to make the tackle because he already had the ball

that play was not brunells fault

NFL Videos: Pre WK1 Can't Miss Play: Meachem catch

watch this one play.....where else can he put the ball so meachem can catch it? not to mention how he avoids the pressure and moves up in the pocket

Re: Back-up QB options?

So, your calculating that Brunell can still produce if Brees goes down because of two plays is just as asinine as you think we are for saying he can't after watching one full game.

now that we are even we need a tie breaker im all for coming up with ridiculous arguments if you guys can use them

SAINT_MICHAEL 03-18-2010 02:14 PM

Re: Back-up QB options?

Brunell's football smarts are not in question, so it makes no difference who has been coaching him. It's what he can physically still do that is in question. And could it be that he has not played with the starters for three years because he is no longer good enough to warrant playing with them?

It is also not true that every pass he has thrown has been when backups were in the game. In the Carolina game Colston, Meacham, and Bush all were starters and were targeted with passes. He has had some great years....in the past. But when you can't hold onto a starting job over QBs like Byron Leftwich, Patrick Ramsey, Jason Campbell, and Todd Collins, it is indicative that you have lost something off your game. He has been in the league for a long time....perhaps too long. Bottom line though is we all hope we don't have to find out if he still has it or not.

1 game as an argument? lmao

i know nobody here has ever jumped the gun on somebody

especially not guys like pierre thomas, jolonn dunbar, jason david, jermon bushrod, and robert meachem

its funny how 1 play/game can make or break a players career according to so many posters here

it is true.....colston caught 1 pass on our very first play but who was the TE in the game?.....DINKINS

bush is not a starter and meachem is not a starter

our leading receivers that game were lynell hamilton and darnell dinkins

oh and on that 1 highlight play of peppers interception.....who were our offensive linemen?

jermon bushrod, carl nicks, nick leckey, jamar nesbit, zach strief.....count it....1 starter at arguably the most important part of any football team

with that kind of protection i can see why brunell might not feel so comfortable in the pocket

what havent i backed up.....im more than willing to try and elaborate

but so far nobody has really answered my question as to why brunell has nothing left in the tank

the only answer ive heard is because he stunk in the carolina game....i feel like arguing that game is like talking to a wall since for some reason my point has gone over everyone's head

You haven't backed up a reason why he still has something left in the tank....other than posting a resume' that pretty much ended four years ago. Oh yeah...and two plays.

i dont care if he isnt an all pro

i was merely trying to point out that he isnt washed up and that basing an opinion on 1 game is kind of dumb

he is a backup....thats what hes supposed to be

but rather than answer the original question, you guys turned it around on me to make me prove that he is a stud....im not saying he is

but i am wondering why, AFTER 1 GAME, you guys have decided he is washed up

im glad we didnt do the same thing after drew's first game as a saint

when he threw for 170 yards on 16 of 30 attempts for a QB rating of 67.....AGAINST THE BROWNS

looks like maybe we shouldnt judge QBs after one game eh?

My apologies. You capitalizing his name made it seem like you put great importance to the point, so I responded to it. So it is ok for you to answer only certain points in other people's posts, but it’s not for others to do the same thing to you? Amazing! Case in point you ignoring my point about Brunell’s failure to hold the starting jobs in Jacksonville and Washington and for three years being unable to find a team that wants him as the starter. Instead you just keep going back to that one Carolina game and making excuses as to why he did poorly as if that is the only evidence that his game is not what it used to be. It isn't worth your time because you've got nothing except (way) past accomplishments to go with. He has not been a successful starting NFL QB for at least 4 years now.

lol hes been a backup for the past 3 seasons.....and the one season before that may in fact be the reason that he was a backup to begin with.

jason campbell was a first round pick in 2005 so you can see why the city may have been calling for campbell to start anyway

IMO the reason brunell didnt start on those teams(even tho he did) is because when teams are losin or winning, the responsibility is always on the QB....even if its not his fault

brunell got the axe because, according the mass fans, it was his fault and campbell and leftwich were just coming into the league as high prospects. leftwich took over for brunell after he was injured and didnt relinquish the position because he was a high draft pick and because he performed admirably

SAINT_MICHAEL 03-18-2010 04:05 PM

Re: Back-up QB options?

That makes sense and could be part of the reason. But the fact that it happened more than once, coupled with what we have seen from his admittingly short performances in pre and regular season certainly is enough to create doubt about him. If you can't understand that and see why some doubt that he has anything "left in the tank" and would rather see us try something else then I don't know what to say. Agree or not, you should be able to see the point of view.

Must I explain one more time how crappy and sluggish the Carolina defense played in that game? I don't care if they were top 5 in defense or not. Their play didn't show it. Brunell couldn't complete anything downfield even when receivers were open and he was playing with players that he practiced with regularly, so there should have been some sort of rhythm, but there wasn't. Sure, he may have been accurate in the past, but he showed no signs of it in that game. You say arguing after one game is dumb and then try to bring Drew's name in this? Now who is the one with the dumb comment? Drew is a starter and we knew that he was better than that game and that he would improve. No one here can say with any certainty that Brunell has still got it or if he doesn't. We have our opinions, and we voice them. In my opinion, if Brees were to miss four games in a regular season, the Saints would be lucky to win one game. If they did win more than that, it wouldn't be because of the arm of Mark Brunell.

The the Carolina D might have collectively had a bad day, but Brunell, with no recent starts under his belt and playing with mostly 2nd and 3rd stringers couldn't? Surely you see how this empties the argument completely, right?

It empties the argument no more than going by 2 plays and a resume that hasn't been added to in 4 years.

Well then argument A is no more valid than argument B. Rekon we're down then to opinion, unless there is more evidence to go on. Brunell has been a successful starter, and there is really no valid evidence to suggest that he can't spot start successfully if needed. That's my take, and I'm not biased in either direction on the guy.
