Sell the naming rights to the dome
We have discussed alot of money issues over the last few months, and I thought that this would be a good question for a poll. If the state of Louisiana could sell the naming rights to the superdome, say McDonald's, Wal Mart, or maybe Hunt's Ketchup, would you be ok with it? I mean, this is the "nature" of business right?

can't change the name of the superdome. That's legend.Although I thought your "Super Center Dome" idea in the other thread was hilarious. You crack me up man.By the way sorry to hear about your job.

Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
I appreciate it man. Another victim of corporate minds. It's all good I got a new job. Start tomorrow.
Back to the subject though, and this is purely hypothetical, but so was 3 Rivers Stadium, and Candlestick park. Both names changed due to the money that was made off of the sale. This poll, in my mind is really a question of, "How far does business ethics go with some of our fans?" It's ok to give up a player, or not re-sign him, because it saves us money to be spent elsewhere for the team, but it's not ok to sell a name, that could mean millions of dollars for the state. Plus possible ticket price decreases, and possible rennovations on the dome itself. |

Tabasco Super Dome

Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
The Saints have very little chance at changing the name of the Super Dome. It's been around since 1975. Corporate sponsors are smart enough to know it will always be the Super Dome. That is why the Saints have zero chance at cashing in on this issue.

Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
If it's going to generate more revenue for our team enabling us to continue to acquire top notch talent, why not?

And if I'm wrong, please correct me, but doesn't the State of Louisiana technically own the superdome? I'm sure concessions would have to made to the Saints for the deal to happen, but the sale would actually benefit Louisiana citizens more than it would the team. Oh yeah, and the Niners have won 5 superbowls, have one of the most historical franchises in NFL history. Steelers have 6 championships, plus probably the strongest fan base in the world. Also very historical. |

Sell it to the Teabaggers. Call it "The Louisiana CromagnoDome"
|
Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
Good for you SaintPaul.
Good luck. SD question, HELL NO!!!!!!!!! The Louisiana Superdome is the real name, but everyone calls it the New Orleans Superdome. Benson Dome (like JerryJones, JoeRobbie)-NO!! Pepsi Center (Denver,CO)-No! StaplesCenter(CA)-NO! You have a good point because many sports/concerts arenas/stadiums are being named after coporations or big sports owners. I would hope N.O. SD's name is never changed which is a change being it is the LA SD.. |
Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
I know this isn't really money related as far as naming rights, but someone help me out here. Wasn't there a push not long ago to have former governor John McKeithan's named added to the Dome? I know he was one of the major players in getting the construction of the Dome passed through Louisiana legislation. Maybe this was a dream, but I could have sworn I read something about this not long ago.

Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
The Crawfish Dome....he he
|
Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
I believe you would have to add a corporations name as a prefix, soembody wrote "Tabasco Superdome" and something like that wouldn't bother me. But if it all of a sudden would be called the Wal-Mart Center that wouldn't fly with me. What would be a good thing is that it could fund further improvements to the dome to keep it up to date or possibly even serve as funding for a new stadium being constructed.

Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
Or how about it funding a better parking situation? Possibly with better tailgating access? Lots of posibillities.

Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome

Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
i hear they are going to have companies sponsor the entrance gate. So instead of walking into Gate A you may be walking into the Ford Entrance. and once you get inside they will have their advertisements

Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
Up until this year, buying the name rights to the Superdome wasn't very attractive to firms outside Louisiana, and really not that attractive to local companies either. The Saints didn't exactly showed up every Sunday on games aired nationally.
Now that the Saints have won the SB and they are going to get more national broadcasts, it may attract interested parties outside Louisiana. Local companies, Crystal is already "the official hot sauce of the New Orleans Saints"- and why not, it is pure Louisiana and delicious :) - but I wouldn't like the Dome be called "The Crystal Superdome". Sounds whimpy. I will tell you this: Walmart gets the naming rights to the Dome, I will not watch a single game until that feces gets wiped off the name. I have never stepped a foot inside a Walmart, and I never will. |
Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
Technically Three Rivers was torn down and the new stadium was always called Heinz Field
As for the Superdome, why not? I really don't see the downside. NOBODY calls a stadium that has had a name change by the new name anyway. I seriously believe it is the biggest waste of advertising dollars possible. So if someone wants to dump a couple mil into the NO/LA economy and pay for a new paint job, let 'em. |
Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
The Community Coffee Dome. Build a big handle on the side of it and paint it to look like a coffee cup.
How far is someone willing to go with this? |

Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
I'll try to say this politely......Not only NO but HELL NO!!! It has always been the Louisiana Super Dome and always will be to me. I could learn to like the Gulf Coast New Orleans Saints if that came to pass.
But with my luck Tampax, Massengill or Midol would win the bid that would change the charisma. I can hear it now "Welcome to tonight's game with The Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints hosting the Cleveland Browns in the recently renovated Preparation H Super Dome.":awe: .............:ohno:.............:argue:.................:bang:....................:chug: If all else fails keep drinking heavily. |
Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
I don't think they can sell it because it has been known as "Superdome" forever and it's a brand name larger than products attached to it. Microsoft considered naming rights before Katrina. Superdome brand is too well known and people would still call it "The Superdome" before "Microsoft Superdome" or "Tabasco Field" etc.

At least it isn't Kohler.
They'd call it the toilet bowl... or the Bidet Bowl. |
Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
It's bad enough that sponsors are slapping their names on all of the college bowl games (some of them literally taking over the bowls, name wise). The Rams dome was named three times. The Dolphins stadium was named four, five times. This is more about money. (Picture this: "Al Copeland Memorial Superdome"/"Al Scramuzza Superdome"/"Schwegmann Dome"/"Popeye's Superdome"/"Royal Sonesta Dome"..... God forbid if it's named the "Katrina Dome", the city would be up in arms carrying AKs and Berettas and flamethrowers.) I hope Mr. Benson takes the Mike Singletary approach: "Can't Do It!"

How about the Lucky Dog Dome... That's what Minnesota calls it anyway.

Re: Sell the naming rights to the dome
I'm really surprised by the turnout on this. When I have read comments on letting players go, or signing at league minimums, or releasing players to make room under the cap, depending on which player it is, alot of you guys have been outspoken on "it's a business", and "that's how business works." But the mere mention of selling "a name", that wouldn't effect anything, but what it is called, and maybe put some much needed money into the state, and it's "oh heck no!" I'm just saying.... It's amazing how much people care about an issue that effects them directly, and make it known, but an issue that effects someone else, brings a different attitude entirely. Not trying to start anything here, just an observation.

I say sell the name, make some cash and upgrade or build a new stadium.
It is a business and all it is, is a name. |
