Bears announce release of defensive end Alex Brown
Posted by Mike Florio on April 1, 2010 1:46 PM ET
As expected, the Chicago Bears have released defensive end Alex Brown.

The eight-year veteran, who joined the team via the fourth-round of the 2002 draft, appeared in 127 games, starting 107 of them.

In 2006, he was a first alternative for the Pro Bowl. The following year, he was a second alternate.

He's now an unrestricted free agent, able to sign with any team -- including the "Final Eight" teams, given that he achieved his status via the termination of his contract.

Yes please. 30 years old, and looks like a 6 sacks per year type guy.

I'd like for us to have him. He is a solid yet not spectacular player that would allow us to look at DT and LB early in the draft and DE later if needed. I think he would be on par with what we saw from Grant if not an upgrade.

Agree. Bring him in. Nails down DE spot with a solid, good guy. Would be an upgrade over Charles Grant. Hopefully we can get him for a good price. Allows us to focus on DT and OLB in the Draft.

Re: Alex Brown to be released today!

Brown finishes his Bears career with 43½ regular-season sacks, 55 tackles for a loss, five interceptions and 16 forced fumbles. Known for playing through pain, Brown suited up for 127 consecutive games, missing just one game during his tenure in Chicago.

This was a salary dump. Plain and simple. He was due over $10MM this year. If I were Loomis, I would already be on the phone with this guys agent.

Agreed. That would be a lethal rotation with him and McCray.

Re: Alex Brown to be released today!

The Alex Brown for Rob Sims trade rumor came and went pretty quickly, but the existence of such a rumor caused us to wonder what the Chicago Bears were planning to do with Brown.

That is no longer a mystery, as the released him on Thursday. The 31-year-old Brown will now attempt to land a job on the free agent market, but it might not take long. An unnamed NFC executive told Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, "He's one of their better defensive players," when told of the impending release.

One team that won't be amongst the initial suitors is the Philadelphia Eagles, according to a tweet from Eagles beat man Geoff Mosher. But one team that could be is the New Orleans Saints, per a tweet from Biggs on Thursday afternoon.

Re: Alex Brown to be released today!

Only two weeks remain in restricted free agency, and once again the market has been very limited. The only player to sign and move to a different team in restricted free agency has been Mike Bell, who signed a one-year deal with the Eagles. Defensive end Darryl Tapp (Philadelphia) and quarterback Charlie Whitehurst (Seattle) moved to different teams via trades.

There are 159 of 216 restricted free agents still unsigned. It's unlikely free agents given first-round tenders or better will move, but those interested teams have until April 15 to make moves. What's been surprising is the limited action among players with lower tenders. Twenty-five restricted free agents are still available with tenders of fifth-rounders or less and there are 10 that require no draft-choice compensation. Free agency started with 40 players having a value of fifth-round or less.

With Alex Brown being released by the Chicago Bears, expect some serious interest from teams in the NFC South. The Carolina Panthers and the New Orleans Saints could be among the teams interested in Brown. The NFC South is the one division that remains true to the 4-3 defense, and Brown is clearly viewed as a defensive end in the 4-3 more than he is a player who can convert to linebacker in a 3-4.

Even though the unrestricted free agent market is slowing down after 36 free agents have moved to different teams, there is another interesting market -- the potential restricted free agents who weren't given tender offers at the start of free agency. That list included 89 players. So far 24 of those players have moved to different teams and 19 have re-signed with their teams. That leaves 46 players on that market. The Eagles picked up defensive tackle Marlin Jackson and wide receiver Hank Baskett from this pool of players. The Seahawks have been one of the most active teams -- signing linebacker Matt McCoy, wide receiver Ruvell Martin and running back Quinton Ganther. The Colts added offensive lineman Andy Alleman and Adam Terry. The Jets grabbed safety Brodney Pool and linebacker Lance Laury.
