NEW ORLEANS ― Open up the newspaper, look at local TV newscasts or take a gander at the sidelines of a Hornets game and you’re likely to find Tracy Porter, the Saints’ now third-year cornerback.
He’s everywhere and, nearly two months after the Super Bowl, still basking in the glow of that victory. Yes, Porter has taken to being a local celebrity just fine. “(I’ve) just been doing a lot of traveling, enjoying the moment and getting a little training in here and there,” Porter said recently from his courtside seats at a Hornets game. No, that’s not a misprint. Porter said has been working out since the beginning of March after taking three weeks off to rest from the long 2009 season, one in which he became instantly recognizable after putting away the Colts in Super Bowl XVLI with a pick-six of Peyton Manning. It’s that drive to succeed that has put him on the fast track to professional success early in his career. While others are traveling or resting, Porter is not. “For the most part, I think I’m ahead of most people because most guys haven’t done anything yet,” Porter said. Still, it’s not like he’s ignoring the good that comes with being a main part of a Super Bowl-winning team. His home town of Port Allen, La., set aside a day to celebrate their native son, renaming the city Porter Allen. He has been to various meet-and-greets and autograph signing sessions. And he has been a frequent visitor to Hornets games, taking time to stop for pictures and handshakes at every turn. “That’s just a great experience and a blessing (and shows) what hard work can do and overcoming adversity when most people had us down and out,” Porter said. Nevertheless, he’s antsy for some return to normalcy. He gets that on April 19 when the Saints have their first offseason workout scheduled. “I’m definitely looking forward to getting back together with the guys, getting that camaraderie back together and that chemistry back together,” Porter said. Until then, he’ll continue to enjoy the moment. That night in the Arena, the biggest cheer didn’t come for anyone on the court. It came when receiver Robert Meachem and Porter were shown on the giant video screen. “We know what type of fans we have here,” Porter said. “We know how much they’re behind the Saints and we just want to give them what they’ve been wanting.” Saints CB Porter enjoying the moment, but ready to get back with teammates | wwltv.com | WWL Sports |
