Interesting trip down (bad) memory lane. He forgot the Ricky Williams draft however. Every team has a list of players like this to bring up though. I doubt we are any worse than league average in drafting through our history.

I think that Erxleben pick was the worst. Back then, in college, they kicked extra points and field goals off a tee and there was no way to know if you could kick without one. To use a 1st round pick for a punter is typical Saints. Come to think of it, I guess the punter on those teams was pretty important. He touched the ball on one of every four offensive snaps.

It is a very astute observation, Poydras, regarding kicking off a tee. It makes a giant difference...especially for guys like Erxleben who was one of a dying breed of straight-on kickers. I was a straight-on kicker, and it was almost impossible to make the transition to kicking off the ground, as my heel would drag on the turf. I also tied my ankle up...and I believe that was illegal as well. No foreign matter other than your shoe could hit the ball. In my case it would have been the shoestring tying my ankle up crossing the front of my shoe as it went underneath and wrapped around the cleat in front. I was not aware that they could not use tees for place-kicks in college any more. Are you sure about that? |
Whether you think you can or think you can't...you're right!
