And they are back to doubting us...

Our John Clayton lists the New Orleans Saints as one of five teams that had the worse off season.

I’m not going to disagree with that and it’s not just because Clayton is a friend and has been one of my mentors in the business. I think Clayton’s spot on when he writes about “the usual drain of the offseason following a Super Bowl run’’ probably taking a toll on the Saints.

I’m not sure the lawsuit against the team by its former security director is going to impact the players at all and I certainly like and respect that the Saints have pretty much kept their team intact. In fact, I think they’re better off in some areas than they were a year ago.

But, let’s face it, what happened with the Saints last season and with a lot of other Super Bowl champions was magic, catching lightning in a bottle, a perfect storm or whatever you want to call it. The Saints were very good, but they also were very lucky and great teams need some of that. The way the scheduled unfolded, the fact they didn’t have any brutal injuries and some other intangibles meant everything went right for the Saints last year.

As Clayton points out, that’s a tough act to follow and every team in the league is going to be out to get the Saints. You know the Falcons, Panthers and Buccaneers have been giving a lot of thought to the Saints.

I still think the Saints will be good and probably make the playoffs. I don’t see doom for them and I will admit there’s one reason why I at least think there’s the possibility of a repeat. His name is Drew Brees. When you’ve got a guy like that around, you can endure some tough luck and still prosper.

Brees alone will simply will the team to 8 or 9 wins right by his lonesome. Beyond that I think we've got enough 'players' to make the dance and give 'Two Dat' a real run.

Clayton has a drinking problem. LOL

My thoughts exactly. As bad as our D was last year and the injuries we still won 8 off Brees arm alone. With no real run game. PT has come into his own. we have added weapons and the Def is better. No way we don't win 11-12 games.

i agree.....no matter how good we were last year....other teams got better and it seems we didnt even do enough to stay the same

i hope the defense isnt the bane of our team again this season or some people will be getting mighty upset

I really question if you are a troll or not sometimes.

I like the part about us 'catching magic in a bottle' and that 'perfect storm' crap. We only went through the best QB's the game had to offer. Clayton may not be high on the Saints as the title of that piece says, but he's sure as hell high on SOMEthing.

Well .. our defense is better .. but shhhhhhhhh ... don't tell anybody! We ARE flying under the radar already as SuperBowl Champs! Un-freaking- believable! I can't wait for TWO DAT!

It's not like he's dogging or singling us out. Don't see this as any slap in the face. Regardless of what franchise in whatever sport, repeating is extremely difficult with attrition, turnover, and money.

Do you guys know that this is the second version of that article that was up today?

In the first version Clayton mentioned Simoneau as one of the key losses.

I guess you can decide whether his opinion is worth considering.

mark simoneau...our former starting MLB and arguably the best backup linebacker at all 3 positions?

yea thats a pretty big loss considering we lost him and fujita and gained nobody

....nice avatar btw

The guy hasn't played since 2007. Maybe we can sign another player to take his place on IR.

the fact they didn’t have any brutal injuries

Really? Jamal Brown, clancy, evans, 3/4 of our secondary. That is spot on

we do that every year......sign players that are supposed to come in and contribute and end up either sitting or getting hurt

despite being on IR for the past 2 seasons he was still our best backup LB

being injured for 2 seasons doesnt mean he was completely done and being healthy for any amount of time doesnt mean you are immune

simoneau ran into a bad stretch of luck but could still fill in at any LB spot and play above the level of most backups we have now

This sounds like your "We don't sign guys from LSU" line Canton. Drew and Sharper are guys we signed that helped a lot. But I will agree we've had our share of free agent signings go down with injuries. Of course we've had our share of guys we got from the draft and trade go down with injuries too.

I was about to bring this up...... I thought by week 10 all the pundits said we were done BECAUSE of injuries. We spent the last 3 weeks resting all of our injured players, Grant went down, sharper was hurting, etc, etc. I love the offseason, it is filled with a plethora of alzheimers patients.

1. Your first statement makes no sense whatsoever.

2. What are you basing that second statement on?

he was our best backup when he was healthy....thats the first point

and just because he was hurt, doesnt mean he wasnt our best backup, it just means he couldnt play those seasons....who did we have as a backup that was better?

the 2nd statement is based on actually watching him play

It's going to be hard to convince anyone that losing MS is going to set the team back from where we were last year since he did not play.

Which backup LB was better than MS last year? Any who was physically able to play.

And he was last healthy in 2007. So, if you want to say that Simoneau, in 2007, was better than our backups were last year then I have no problem with that. Of course, that has nothing to do with whether this year's team will be less effective than last year's team given the fact that MS did not play.

the original comment had nothing to do with how we would be different than last year.....the original comment simply said that mark simoneau was a key loss

he was because when he's healthy he was our best backup

So, you are saying that none of our backup linebackers are as good as a guy who can't play?

I can just imagine Canton as the head coach of the Saints.

DC: We need to put in our backup LB.

Canton: Well, they aren't as good as Simoneau.

DC: But Simoneau is on IR Coach.

Canton: Yeah, sure we can't play him?

DC: Yeah Coach, pretty sure we can't play the guy on IR.

Canton: Okay, screw it. Lets just run with 10 on defense. Same difference anyway.

DC: *BANG*

If only I could start a poll, we could make this a solve-it-yourself mystery. Did the DC commit Suicide or Murder?

Which is a true statement.

As if they ever liked us to begin with, hell from the 8-8 season before we became the champs we didn't even like us. Peyton was considering realeasing Fujita and Shanle in favor of now retired Simenou and Derek Brooks. Now Fujita is highly overpaid and living it up with Lebron let's hope the king likes him or it's off to New York for him ( Braylon Edwards ). Seriously though this type of article fuels guys like Sean Peyton and Drew Brees. Is Clayton smoking something, the only thing that is keeping us from a division title reapeat is air, oppurtunity and a video game curse. Once we get out playoff spot there's only a couple of teams that can derail the Saints train two reside in the same division, Minnesota, and Green Bay, and if Farve doesn't come back or Rodgers offensive line doesn't hold up all bets are off and the other is Dallas but as in every year for about 10 years now they wont be able to get out of there own way so tell that guy who looks like a wayward sparrow looking for worms to chew on to punch my ticket to North Texas

If Saints make it back to the Championship in the next 3 years i think ESPN will just sell their company and seek something else to do, i know they hate when Saints make them look foolish each year.

Most of the clowns from the 4 letter network are just trying to gin up ratings, so they say ridiculous stuff. IMO if you want to really know whats going on with the NFL as a whole, you need to get a Sirius radio and tune in to thier NFL channel, 124. The Sirius Blitz and Moving the Chains are the 2 best shows and these guys really know their stuff.

SaintPauly 05-21-2010 04:45 PM

Re: And they are back to doubting us...

I just try to watch NFL Channel. Their afternoon program pretty much covers all of the bases, when it comes to important off season moves, injuries, whatever. What I don't see on there, I read here. Because in all honesty, the Saints are my team, and I don't care if the Seahawks signed a back up DT yesterday. If it ain't the Saints, I don't give a damn. But I'm speaking for myself.
