Former LSU standout and current New Orleans Saints free agent defender Harry Coleman was arrested on a simple battery charge around 3 a.m. last Sunday morning, authorities in St. Mary Parish confirm.
Details of the incident, which happened in the early morning hours, remain sketchy. Coleman was arrested and released on the charge, which generally is tied to allegations stemming from a scuffle.
Records show the arrest was made by the Chitimacha Police Department, according to the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office. A woman answering the phone at the Chitimacha Police Department said she did not have access to Sunday's records and that it was unlikely anyone who did would be able to discuss the matter before Wednesday.
Some law enforcement officials speculated that, given the hour, Coleman, a native of Baldwin, may have also been involved in an incident at the casino run by the Chitimacha tribe.
Officials at LSU, where Coleman was a two-year starter and a member of the 2007 national championship team, said they first learned of the matter through a posting at Tigerdroppings,com and did not have any additional comment.
Saints officials also did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The team signed Coleman, who started at both safety and linebacker for the Tigers and led the team in tackles in 2008, to a free agent contract within hours of the 2010 NFL draft conclusion. Coleman participated in the Saints rookie camp earlier this month and is presumably involved in the team's offseason activities that began Monday and will conclude Thursday.

Stuff happens guys. Even if he did get into a fight, he will pay the fine for it. I'm not going to condemn a guy, for doing something I've done, on more than one occasion.

If Coleman was on the Saints team last year I would be convinced that it was Brett Favre who made this claim. But for now, it is way early in the process to tell what exactly happened.

I reallize that Roger Goodell has a six foot crucifix above his bed, reads bible scriptures to the blind once a week, and has NEVER had sex with a woman, unless they were married and trying to concieve, but does that mean everyone else in the NFL has to be borderline "saints", to not be stomped to death in the press, and thrown to the "lions" by him? What's the old saying, "To err is human." If the guy had stabbed someone, shot someone, or possibly pummelled them with a slot machine, I could see him getting cut, but that didn't happen. This zero tolerance crap keeps up, and we're going to have a bunch of boyscout, pocketprotecter wearing, poindexters playing linebacker in the NFL. Wait a minute, I think I just described Goodell..... Heh heh heh....

OH, and just for reference, why was so little made out of Jerry Jones' drunken rant, about Tim Tebow? If that had been a player caught out like that, making those statements, Holy Father Goodell would have had them suspended four games, castrated, and shackled in the city square for all to throw garbage at them.

I think we should make Jack Lambert commisioner....

Someone told me this, and I've made it my creed, "Never trust anyone, without at least one vice." Goodell looks like Howdy Doody, with a 3,000 dollar suit on. I mean, I only see him on tv, so in his personal life, he might like to get drunk in his back yard, and run over squirrels with his riding mower, but from what I've seen, he seems to think his stool smells like strawberrys....

Chitimacha Tribal police chief Blaise Smith offered more details today on the arrest of New Orleans Saints rookie and former LSU standout Harry Coleman early Sunday morning. According to the Associated Press, Smith said Coleman shoved someone out of the way while leaving a tribal casino in St. Mary Parish.

When I was his age I was out at the bars at 3 AM, and at that time scuffles happen a whole lot easier. I'm not going to pass judgment on this kid....I'll let the league handle that. Although, Payton really is all about leaders in the locker room and good character guys. I guess he'll look into it then decide if it would be a good move to release him.

Unlike recent suspensions handed out by Goodell, this situation so far does not involve an overly serious crime where injury or death occurred (like Stallworth), nor does the player involved have a past history of questionable behavior (Pacman, Big Ben). So unless more comes out than a shove at the casino, I will be surprised if the league gets involved (of course I was surprised the league decided on a cold weather SB too!). It would surprise me less if the Saints cut him to send a message about what they will and will not tolerate. The staff can’t be happy if he was out at 3:00 during a minicamp. Not a good way for a rookie free agent to impress the coaches.

totally agree saint michael , it seems something else may be turned up. why doe's it seem a woman is behind this pushing and shoving. and for staff to over look this arrest ain't gonna happen i hope he don't pay for it as example like you said. 3 in the morning geeeessss.

College life is over. The real world starts now. Ask Charles Grant about what can happen when you put yourself in this position. Coleman was a practice squad guy at best. Now, his shot at that is lessened. When a fringe player acts like this I'm reminded of Glanville's words. The NFL stands for "not-for-long" baby. I hope he got his degree.

Misdemeanor for a simple shove. This is not as big of a deal as it's was originally made to be. I actually think it's actually a great lesson for this kid on the realities of life as a pro athlete. You can't throw your future away on someone that has no future because they may talk to you in a way you don't like. At the same time, all of the facts are not out, so in my mind he is innocent until proven guilty of this.

this is not a big deal, he will make the team. This is just a slow offseason and we are looking for something to argue about.
