Drew Brees wears a target on his back as easily as he wears his No. 9 New Orleans Saints jersey.

Brees knows the rest of the NFL has the Saints in their sights after he led the reborn franchise to its 31-17 Super Bowl victory over the Indianapolis Colts, and he knows it will take a focused, groounded squad to weather the assault.

"We talk about it all the time," Brees said. "We can all continue to get better. The minute you think you've arrived, you're done, and they're going to get you. You never stand still. You either get better, or you decline.

"We all need to look in the mirror," he added. "It often comes down to doing the little things right. You have to trust the process, and trust your teammates that they're doing everything they can to get better."

Brees made his first visit to Lafayette on Thursday as a special guest at the Acadian Ambulance Paramedic Luncheon, and was wildly cheered for bringing a Super Bowl title to a city, state and region that has suffered through lean years and natural disasters.

The equation is changed now, with the Saints as the team to beat, but it's not an entirely new scenario.

"We experienced a little bit of it last year when we went 13-0 to start the season," Brees said. "Midway through the season, everybody was giving us their best shot. And for teams that weren't having a good year, it was like their Super Bowl.
