"Reggie Bush can run the ball..."

OK...I'm gonna tell the story.

The year...1972. The place...Gulfport's fair ground stadium outside of Milner Stadium. The event...just following an exhibition game loss by my Amer. Legion baseball team.

We were all in the dugout after the game and we were being addressed by our coach Irvin Favre...the father of all Saints fans 2nd favorite QB. Coach Favre was quite p.o.'d at our play, and when scolding us, he singled out our centerfielder, who had a particularly tough time with a fly ball to center that got caught up in the hedges covering the fence.

Coach said, "and Billy Olson...I don't care if you have to climb the fence to catch the ball...CATCH IT!"

Well it just so happens that there was a mentally challenged "kid" (he was actually in his 30's but had the mentality of an 8 year old) named Ronnie, and Billy Olson was his favorite player. After coach Favre told Billy Olson to climb the fence if he had to, Ronnie hollers from the end of the dugout, "BILLY OLSON CAN CLIMB THE FENCE, COACH!"

It was all we could do to keep from busting out laughing.

I told my kids this story several times when they were young, but then one day as I was watching the Saints...Reggie ran the ball out of bounds instead of lowering his head to try to get that extra 1/2 yard. I shouted, "COME ON, REGGIE...RUN THE BALL!"

My daughter hollers back..."REGGIE BUSH CAN RUN THE BALL!"

I split a gut.

I guess you had to be there...
