this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I saw this topic on another board and I thought it would make an interesting discussion. So after Brees, what player being injured would cripple our team? Why?...

Shockey! Not necessarily for the loss of production, but for his leadership on the field, and his on field presence. Plus, being a fan favorite, it would be a big blow to the morale of the fans and the players.

Gotta be Vilma. Just as the loss of our offensive leader would leave a lot to be desired, losing Vilma would be a little hard to swallow IMO. His range sideline to sideline and versatility against the run and the pass, has him head and shoulders above all of our front 7. His numbers were top shelf EVERY week. As good as the number one offense is, if we start giving up 30+ per game, we are back to 9-and-7 or 8-and-8 or worse. Vilma is #2 behind Drew Brees.

Re: Who would be our biggest loss after Brees?
I'm going with Greer. Without him shutting down his side of the field, I think teams would throw all over us. While being a proven playmaker, Porter isn't quite consistent at this stage in his career. Harper while being a stout run defender, isn't strong against the past. Sharper while having a fantastic 1st half of the season, disappeared for much of the second half and is also a year older coming off surgery. I think we can manage to play average without Vilma... but losing Greer would be crippling to our secondary.

Morstead, actually any number of players but if you go back and look at films Morstead was very instrumental in most of the games. For instance, Percy Harvin never had a chance to run back a kickoff in the Biqueens game and he is dangerous on runbacks. Also, would you have wanted any other kicker attempting the onside kick in the SB? Think not!
