The only non-kicker Saint I ever booed is Dave Wilson. Geez he sucked! I remember the Dome cheering when he got hurt, because his backup was Hebert. Chip Loehmiller deserves a spot on the hall O' shame. I've never seen a kicker that bad. |

Here's how I remember it: The fans had been wanting Hebert to play for weeks, but D. Wilson was Bums starter at the beginning of the season. The fans were tired of Wilson's very careful, by-the-book approach, which included throwing the ball away, and taking sacks, rather than scrambling around & gunslinging, as Hebert did in the preseason. When Wilson went down, and wasnt getting up, the crowd began cheering, and I have to admit, I was rather excited to know The Cajun Cannon was coming in. I remember the first time I saw him interviewed when the USFL folded, and he was looking at the NFL. A reporter asked him where he was interested in going, and he mentioned growing up in Cut Off, and actually WANTING to play for the New Orleans Saints. People, that was crazy talk back then. Very similiar to Bernie Kosar WANTING to play for the Browns. Do you remember the beginning of the 1986 season, feeling like we'd stepped into a new age? |

Re: Who's your worst Saints ever.
naaa... I couldnt even drink back then w/o going nuts.
funny, I've never cared much for change. I didnt want Bum to go. I didnt know about this new Mora guy, although Sports Illustrated said some mighty good things about him and some of his Philadelphia Stars players who were coming along with him, namely Sam Mills. Then we had all these new guys with funny names like Swilling. |

The main thing I knew was that Bum Phillips was their coach, and I was supposed to hate the guy because my dad did. Which later in life made very little sense to me, because I never liked the same teams or players that my dad did. He was a Cowgirls fan, I liked the Steelers. He liked the Braves, and I liked the Cubs. I know that in 1986 they had this new coach named Jim Mora, so I started following them very closely and became a fan of the coach and the franchise. The Steelers had become an afterthought. I watched a team transform from a team that so many people made fun of to a perennial division contender. I felt my love for the team grow as my hatred for the 49ers grew with it. We never could get over that 49er hump it seemed. I watched The Dome Patrol become the most feared linebacking corps in the NFL at the time. I've stuck by their sides for the last 24 years which doesn't compare to many of the posters in here, but I have suffered my share, too. I consider 1986 as a rebirth and 2009/2010 is the year maturity was reached. ![]()
P.S. My most hated Saint was probably Cam Cleeland. A guy who was hyped up to be the savior for the Saints at the TE position, but the number of times on the shelf due to injury were equivalent to Lindsay Lohan's wrap sheet. |
