Saints Offense could be more dangerous in 2010

How can the NFL’s number one offense get better? That’s exactly what the Saints offense did from 2008 to 2009. The league’s most potent offensive unit improved in several key areas last season and those improvements made a dangerous offense down right scary!

Going into the 2009 season the knock on the Saints offense was basically all flash and no power. In 2008 the Saints were 28th in the NFL in rushing with an average of 99-yards per game.

New Orleans made a commitment to be more physical rushing the football and they did. The Saints finished the regular season with the 6th best rushing offense with an average of 131.6-yards per game.

But perhaps it was the number of rushing attempts that grew from the ‘08 season to ‘09 is what helped to make the Saints’ offense even more difficult to game plan against. In 2008 the Saints rushed the ball 398 times for an average of 24.8 attempts per game. In 2009 the Saints ran the ball a total of 468 times for an average of 29.5 times per game. Now, look closely. That’s a difference of five more rushes per game. On first sight that might not seem like much, but pay attention to the balance the Saints had last season.

The Saints attempted 34 passes per game in 2009 and 29.5 rushes. In 2008 the Black & Gold didn’t have consistent balance. The Saints attempted nearly 40 passes per game (39.75) and 24.8 rushes. That’s 15 more pass attempts per game than rushes in ‘08 compared to just five more passes than rushes per game in ‘09.

“I thought we had great balance last year and that will be key for us again this season,” said Saints Executive Vice President/General Manager Mickey Loomis. The Saints offense has been the best in the NFL three of the last four seasons.

The O-line is a veteran group that features two of the best guards in the game--Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks. Tackles Jon Stinchcomb and Jermon Bushrod are solid and did a nice job protecting Drew Brees last season. And, Center Jonathan Goodwin is back to anchor the middle of the line.

The Saints have an arsenal of pass catchers from backs, to tight ends to wide receivers. This group has become arguably the best overall from top to bottom in the NFL, and with the addition of rookie TE Jimmy Graham, this department should be even better in 2010.

FB Heath Evans is ahead of schedule and his play brings even more versatility to the Saints offense. RB’s Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas are the headliners, but look for more improvement from Lynell Hamilton and PJ Hill, who was brought back after being on the Saints practice squad last season, before spending time with the Eagles and Redskins.

As the Saints enter training camp there doesn’t seem to be any major questions on offense or any big time position battles of note. However, everyone keeping an eye on which player becomes the #2 QB behind Drew Brees.

Chase Daniel has been in the system for almost a year now and veteran QB Patrick Ramsey has been added to the battle, along with rookie Sean Canfield. How incoming rookie LT Charles Brown progresses will be interesting to watch…along with the play of WR Adrian Arrington.

Arrington has made some noise previously, but needs to standout this camp in order to get into the rotation. Arrington should take advantage of possible extra reps with Colston and Meachem being on the PUP list for the first part of camp.

Scoring: 510 points = 31.9 points per game (1st in NFL)

Passing: 4,355-yards = 272.2 yards per game (4th in NFL) / 34 TD's (4th in NFL)

Not in the least bit concerned about the offense. It WILL be there.

Now, if the defense improves (and Gregg Williams expects it to) the Saints may well be in Dallas next February.
