New Orleans Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey has an animated practice
For better or for worse, New Orleans Saints tight end Jeremy Shockey figured prominently in several plays Saturday as the team's 2010 training camp progressed.
Perhaps most notably, Shockey made the non-catch of the day. Quarterback Drew Brees made a gorgeous throw, a needle-threader right down the middle that zipped past the outstretched hands of two defenders and arced perfectly into Shockey's hands. He dropped it, earning a disappointed buzz from the crowd. And Shockey was clearly aware of the crowd's reaction. Earlier, he had made a catch and then was hit almost immediately by free agent safety Reggie Jones. The collision resulted in a strip/drop and Shockey was clearly disgusted with himself. He spun around though and, looking at Jones, flicked his wrist and index finger in the gesture a player uses to claim he was down when the ball came loose. That joke earned appreciative laughter from the crowd. Still playing to the crowd, and obviously miffed at his drop, Shockey later made a solid catch on a long throw from Patrick Ramsey. Shockey laid out for it and, bouncing to his feet after the catch, promptly punted the ball - quite high and deep - in a move that seemed gratuitously goofy but nonetheless got another vocal reaction from the fans. It also prompted an on-field exchange, as running back Reggie Bush related after practice. "You know, I said to Drew that it's funny that fans are cheering for what would be a 15-yard penalty or a possible ejection in a game," Bush said. |
