Center: Veteran Jonathan Goodwin holds the starting job, as he has for 31 of the 58 games in which he has played since joining the team before the 2006 season. He was named to the Pro Bowl roster last season.
Behind him is Nick Leckey, who is entering his seventh season in the league. Leckey has handled the backup defensive linemen with comparative ease in training camp.

Third on the depth chart and presumably a player who could put Leckey on the bubble is Matt Tennant, the Saints' third-round draft choice out of Boston College.

He was viewed as Goodwin's eventual replacement when the Saints drafted him.

DEPTH CHART
No. Player Ht. Wt. Ex.
76 J. Goodwin 6-3 318 9
60 Nick Leckey 6-3 291 7
65 Matt Tennant 6-4 300 R
FIRST DOWN

The Saints worked on their two-minute drill in the afternoon practice, and the starting offense did not deliver in sterling fashion. With the team trailing by 3, Drew Brees just overthrew Lance Moore, who had beaten cornerback Tracy Porter, missing a sure touchdown.
Brees came back to hit Moore twice to pick up first downs, but the offense was eventually forced to settle for a 52-yard field goal (not attempted).
Brees finished 6-for-11, and one of the incompletes was a ball it appeared cornerback Jabari Greer should have intercepted.
WHO'S HOT

Quarterback Chase Daniel, looking to win the backup job behind Brees, had an outstanding afternoon. First he scrambled to his right on a play and, finding nothing but open field in front of him, sprinted down the right sideline. Cornerback Reggie Jones finally caught up to him inside the 5-yard line, but Daniel cut back and scampered into the end zone.
Then when he was put in charge of the two-minute offense, he found himself playing 10 on 11 with the clock running toward 0:00 after wide receiver Rod Harper injured his hip. Daniel drifted to his left on the last play and then spotted wide receiver Courtney Roby in the far right corner of the end zone.
Daniel rifled the ball from about the 20-yard line all the way across the field, where Roby caught it for a touchdown.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

"Those are just meathead comments. You know what, it is what it is. People trying to get their team fired up. They're trying not to let a successful season get to them ... at the end of the day, people are going to talk with their pads, and we'll see how things happen down in New Orleans."
• Vikings defensive end Jared Allen when informed Saints defense coordinator Gregg Williams said the Saints "message hits," were out there, "starting with No. 4," according to a USA Today report.
PLAY OF THE DAY

In the morning practice, running back Chris Ivory ripped off a 40-yard scoring run in which he zigzagged through a mass of players not far off the line of scrimmage, and then blew past Jones in the secondary.

He's looking really good in camp. We'll see more of him Thursday at the Pats. He gives us really good depth or another weapon for Payton to insert when he wants.
