New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, already established as a coach open to new ideas, wasn't shy Tuesday morning about what he is hoping to learn with the Saints in New England for two days or practices prior to the team's first preseason game against the Patriots Thursday night.
Payton is seeking the recipe for repeats, and the Patriots, as the last NFL team to accomplish that feat, are the ones to ask.
In fact, Payton said, the Saints aren't being coy about it. The Patriots franchise that won three Super Bowls in four years between 2001 and 2004 - and went to another in 2007, only to see their undefeated season shattered by the New York Giants - are the model Payton seeks to build in New Orleans.
Thus far, Payton feels good about what he's absorbed.
"I talked to Tom Brady earlier and I say, 'hey, you guys won in '01, and then in '02 you didn't have that success, but then you won in '03 and again in '04,' and the question was, 'what was the difference between '02 and '04?'" Payton said.
"And there was a lot that goes into it but certainly you gain an appreciation for the challenge," Payton said. "And you know just because you've got a lot of your team back that really means nothing. It's a new year and you know what? The best team will win the championship this year.
"But (the Patriots) would be the team," he went on. "And I've said this a number of times, when we got hired in 2006 we looked closely at New England, at what they were doing. Clearly they were the model and we're not afraid to talk about that."
