Lynell Hamilton done for the year (pg.3 update)

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the Saints believe the knee injury sustained by Lynell Hamilton Wednesday morning is a torn ACL.

It's a tough break for Hamilton, who was on track to pick up many of the inside touches that Mike Bell handled last year. There's now a much stronger chance that Pierre Thomas will take over goal-line duties, though he'll have to hold off young power backs P.J. Hill and Chris Ivory. The Saints could also revisit free agent Ladell Betts.

If this is true, I'm glad PJ Hill knows the playbook and Ivory has been turning some heads. It's a loss, but certainly manageable.

Just another reason that training camp and preseason is just a bad idea. I hope this is the end of the injury bug and not the beginning.

Saints' running back Lynell Hamilton injured in practice; could be gone for season

Quote:

The three-headed monster at running back that people were looking forward to this season for the New Orleans Saints just got short one head.

Running back Lynell Hamilton went down in practice on Wednesday with what is being reported as an ACL tear in his right knee. ESPN's Adam Schefter said that is what the team suspects it to be and it could cost him his season.

Coach Sean Payton said after practice that the team would examine him to find out the true severity.

Reggie Bush did return to practice on Wednesday after being held out of Tuesday's afternoon session.

Hamilton figured to be a big part of the offense this year by most likely filling in for the void let by Mike Bell who signed with Philadelphia.

The Saints now have Pierre Thomas and Bush, but also a host of other running backs that could step into Hamilton's spot should be really be gone all season.

P.J. Hill and Chris Ivory are two names that have been heard of a lot this training camp, but chances are the Saints will also bring in some veteran running backs to check out more players. More on this story as it develops.

That means hill and ivy made the team.

Injuries happen in the NFL every day. Lynell's injury is nothing new and certainly is not a reason to cut out the entire preseason.

I hate this happened to Lynell. He really had the opportunity this season.

If I hadn't seen these two running backs running hard at camp I'd be a lot more nervous. They both looked real good. Still I hate the idea of losing Hamilton for the season. He was coming on strong. More on this later I'm sure.

Should of kept Bell around, that contract wasn't going to break the bank down here and there would of been plenty to go around to all the RFA's this offseason ... I don't have much faith in Hill or Ivey or whatever scab they find to fill the 3rd RB role

Apparently, he had difficulties with cleats!

Bad loss if true. But if we are to have a season ending injury, its probably better in the preseason.
Mid-season we could put Ivory or Hill in a real game, were they could fumble 2-3 times before Payton found out they cant do it. Granted its never a good thing, just looking at the positive, instead of dwelling on the neg.

I think Hill and Ivory will do fine. I was actually very surprised by Ivory in TC, I had thought PJ Hill was better.

I think we will be fine ...hate this for Hamilton..its really going to set him back,,,,dont be suprised if we do bring in a vet now..like Jamal Lewis...Betts or Fargas....or trade for another power back ..sucks for Lynell ..

Here is a list of backs that might be worth a look

1. Ladell Betts
2. Chris Brown
3. Justin Fargas
4. Samkon Gado
5. Ahman Green
6. Kevin Jones
7. LaMont Jordan
8. Jamal Lewis
9. Oren O'Neal
10. Xavier Omon
11. Adrian Peterson (not thee AP, the one who backed up Forte)
12. Dantrell Savage
13. Aaron Stecker
14. Brian Westbrook
15. Kris Wilson

Perhaps Jamal Lewis off that list if push come to shove, Fargas already signed with Denver. But I'm with Pherein, I think we'll be fine with our current guys.

Time to bring Jamal Lewis in to see what he can do. i'd think he still has one good year left.

Oh they'll definitely sign a veteran RB now.

A Wednesday MRI confirmed that Saints RB Lynell Hamilton suffered a torn ACL at this morning's practice.

He's out for the year. The 2010 season is setting up very well for Pierre Thomas, who now has only marginal talents P.J. Hill and Chris Ivory to fend off for goal-line carries. Short-yardage backs won't be hard to find after final cuts, but anyone acquired in September will take time to learn the offense. Thomas should open the year as New Orleans' top option in the red zone. Aug. 11 - 4:31 pm et

There's not a name on that list that could come into camp and help this team this season. The Saints should just stick with what they have already

Herb Donaldson may be available after final cuts. He's pretty familiar with our offense.

if i remember correctly p.j. hill out did all takers last preseason besides hamilton. its why we put him on practice squad, and lost him to philly. i think which is'nt much lol that were fine and stacked with the supprize of ivory.

Marshawn Lynch might be an option...he might straighten up here and run well behind our line...

Re: Lynell Hamilton done for the year (pg.3 update)

Very tough blow, but the Saints should be fine. I just hope things work out so that the Saints do not have to blow a future draft pick on a veteran. Heck, why not see if Deuce wants one last shot and see what he has? Seriously, there should be guys available who can play in the Saints system with relative ease.

They like him..Danno...think he makes the team or practice squad..he was the best back the othernite...im sure he's on our radar..

there are a lot of other people on this team I am glad it wasn't. This hurts, but it is not devastating

True. After all we're talking about a position that was gonna get 5 or 6 carries a game, and mostly just short yardage.

The Dallas..Cincy game just came on again Danno..NFLN...u can see H.D again...just a heads up...Jordan Shipley is the star of that game

B_Dub_Saint 08-11-2010 07:20 PM

Not good

papz 08-11-2010 09:19 PM

With 3 capable starting runningbacks on the Cowboys roster, I think Donaldson can very well be an option.
