Camp 2Dat: New Orleans Saints safety Chris Reis must be 'special' to make roster
METAIRIE – As Camp 2Dat presses on, job security may be the last thing veteran New Orleans Saints safety Chris Reis wants. He is perfectly happy to be fighting for a roster spot. Always has been, probably always will be. In fact, he wouldn’t have it any other way. In other words, don’t dare burst his bubble. “I see myself as a bubble guy,’’ Reis said after the team’s 20th practice of training camp Sunday. “I’m always going to be a bubble guy. I don’t know how to look at it any other way. I’ve been that my whole career; through NFL Europe, my three years in the NFL. That’s me, a bubble guy.’’ Reis, indeed, is a member of this year’s “Bubble Brigade,’’ one of approximately 10 players who are vying for the final six or seven spots on the 53-man roster. From a different perspective, he is one of 14 defensive backs currently on the 80-man roster who are vying for nine, possibly 10 spots out of the secondary. He has a leg up on some “bubble’’ players because of his prowess on special teams (see his heroics against the Indianapolis Colts in Super Bowl XLIV when he recovered the crucial onside kick to open the third quarter). But ultimately Reis simply has to prove he still belongs in the NFL. “I know that sounds kind of cliché but I want to be one of those guys who never really takes for granted that I have a spot,’’ Reis said. “I know I’m going to be a role player and that’s fine with me. “I’m going to work as hard as I can to make this team. Every year, and every day, I know I have to make an impression on these coaches, no matter what. I’m working to earn a spot, bottom line. If I get too comfortable, that’s when my spot can be taken. For me, it’s all about working hard.’’ Outworking others has been Reis’ modus operandi since leaving Georgia Tech and signing as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in May 2006. |
