NEW ORLEANS – Young Chase Daniel might not have locked down the No. 2 quarterback job for the New Orleans Saints on Saturday night, but he likely found a home somewhere in the NFL.

In fact, there were times during the Saints’ lopsided 38-20 win against the overmatched Houston Texans when I wondered “Who Dat?’’ as in where has this No. 10 been the first three weeks of training camp.

The former triggerman in the University of Missouri shotgun formation turned out to be the most productive QB in the sold-out Superdome (that includes Drew Brees and Matt Schaub), completing 15 of 21 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns in nearly three quarters of work for a sparkling passer rating of 117.5.

It was Daniel’s longest stint since Dec. 29, 2008, when he rallied Mizzou to a 30-23 victory against Northwestern in the Valero Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, Texas.

“It felt normal again,’’ Daniel said at his cubicle inside the Saints’ remodeled locker room. “I can’t even tell you the last time I’ve gotten to play more than a quarter. It’s almost been two years since I’ve played an entire game.

“To get out there again and feel that feeling of controlling the huddle and having command and just going out there and just playing and not worrying about what happens is awesome.’’

That lilting song by Sade, “Smooth Operator,’’ came to mind as the 23-year-old Daniel made a strong case to become Brees' fulltime understudy.

I was proud of Chase,’’ said Brees, who directed two touchdown drives in his three series. “He has worked extremely hard throughout the whole offseason, not only physically but mentally studying the offense. He’s had success despite the odds throughout his entire career, dating back to high school.

“He makes plays and wins game. There is something to be said for that, despite his size (like Brees, Daniel is listed at 6 feet tall). I’ve been down that road before, so I know where he is. He just has to keep humble, go out there and do it again.’’

I was really pleased with the way chase played. One of his first passes was really behind david thomas but i think that was nerves. Plus he showed he could march the O down the field, the part that i really liked was on 3rd and 14 - Daniels in the shotgun, stays calm in the pocket, his first option is not open so he progresses to the second, QUICK COLSTON OPEN, throws a bullet for 25 yards, first down!!
Also how he stayed calm on 4th and goal with 4 seconds to go in the half, TD to Zac Keasey.

We better find a roster spot for this guy.. NOW.. he will be.. i say WILL BE a starter somewhere in the NFL.. im not going to whip out the anointing oil for him just yet but if he keeps up with what he did last night if nothing else he could be a very valuable asset to us in future trade negotiations.

Brees really looks proud of Chase lol As Brees rightfully said, you have to be humble and do it again.

chase looked good and the way he commanded the 1st team offense then the second team with poise but hes not going to get my he's the answer for our back-up till ramsey gets his 3 qtr outing. still chase was the man last night. does anyone remember a backup commandeering the offense like that. and i believe if ramsey flops we might bring in a seasoned vet latter after the cuts start yielding solid players.
