METAIRIE, La. ― Patrick Ramsey hasn’t worked with a first-team offense in more than four seasons.
Friday night against San Diego, he might just get that opportunity again. Saints Head Coach Sean Payton said Tuesday that when Drew Brees leaves the game, he’ll turn it over to Ramsey, New Orleans’ offseason acquisition to possibly be the team’s backup quarterback. And for that, Ramsey, the former Tulane standout, is happy. “I certainly appreciate it,” Ramsey said. “I think the one thing I appreciate so much about coach is he understands the position pretty well. Very well, I would say. He understands all the things that go into running this offense and things of that nature. “It’s great o have him on your side.” Chase Daniel picked up the snaps on all but four of New Orleans’ series Saturday night against Houston. In so doing, he led the Saints to scores on 4 of 7 drives, including three touchdowns. Included in that time on the field was several series with the first-team offense. “He played excellently,” Ramsey said of Daniel. “There’s obviously no denying that.” But just because Daniel played well doesn’t mean Ramsey is anymore worried about his job than normal. “I go out there to play and play the best I can,” Ramsey said. “The honest truth at that point and after that is I want to go out there and compete and I want to go out there and score every time we touch the ball and that’s what I’m going to attempt to do.” That opportunity will come Friday night in the Superdome. Payton said Ramsey will likely get every snap that Brees doesn’t take. Against the Texans, Brees came out after the third series, which ended the first quarter. “It’s just trying to give them enough series to give them the opportunity to get comfortable with what they’re doing and the operations of a game,” Payton said. “Sometimes if it’s just a quarter or a quarter-and-a-half, it’s harder to do that at that position.” |

I guess this one is pretty simple, if Ramsey does really well, at least equal to what Daniel did last week, the Saints keep three QB's. If Ramsey stinks it up then I say the Saints roll with only two, at least to start the season. Not saying Ramsey wouldn't be on the team at all, but you know he would not make the final roster, due to that salary being guaranteed. Bring him back in week 2 and the roster is no longer guaranteed.

It's Ramsey's job to lose, actually, because of his experience. He will likely play much of the second half of the San Diego game, and also quite a bit in game 4 (since the starters will likely sit most of game 4). If Ramsey does not show the ability to move the team, he will probably be waived in favor of Chase Daniel.

He's got a heck of a performance by Chase Daniel to try and outshine!! Chase really helped his cause with that last game, lets see what ramsey can do.

Behind the Saints O-Line, with all the playmakers on the team, and with Payton as the head coach, either Ramsey or Daniel can get the job done if the worst happens. Not to Drew's level of course, but I don't think the Saints would be completely out of the mix.

i'm not quite ready to give the job to chase. he could have easily had 3 picks in that game. i'm going to watch even closer to ramsey, which has much more experience. if he fails to have a few nice drives against the chargers we may bring in another vet. opening the back up spot again.

I was excited when we signed Ramsey. I still am. He's been less rusty each time I'v seen him. A good run with the first team offense Friday night should make it difficult not to keep him. If not........I don't know what comes next but you can bet Payton has a plan.
